way to go Eric... Im in the market for the very same said Race vehicle tow'er. White crewcab diesel..fwiw. You know those things run like 19.5 in the 1/4 mile..? There is alot of experienced people doing burnouts in CTD's can someone explain the proper proceedure..? also How do you guys Stage your tow vehicle when your in the lanes.? What is the MPH trap speed? now thats some race talk...should be enough to keep it right here in this section..lol Good looking truck post some pics...Im curious what everyone thinks about the mileage...Again considering ive been looking/market... should that mileage scare anyone? in my case it prolly would be driven daily also..or mostly daily (work)plus races.. Actually id attend way more races if i had a CTD. Eric do you know what axle ratio it has? Is it stock-unmodified or upgraded? cheapst

Cool truck you're gonna love it. Wish I had my 06 back, this POS GMC I have has got to go. I hate this truck with a passion.

Glad you are finally able to get your truck, I know you have been looking for one for some time, I like my 93, wasn't real impressed with it towing ability at first, but after a new 4" exhaust, new performance injectors, and having one of the local diesel guru's "tune it up", it run's better than new, so it should make the tow to Bob George country a lot less of a white knuckle trip. With a CTD truck of that mileage what should Eric (or anyone else for that matter) look at/for..In reguards to reliabilty or maintainence-service of Said CTD Race car tow vehicle?. before a long trip towing his race car to say???? M.I.R. this weekend.. Eric I am curious to see your opinions on it as you get used to it...see what you like or would change? ..sort of first impressions info. especially when you tow with it. As im in the same boat/market as you. cheapst

My 04.5 got 19-21 highway, 16 in town, 12 towing a 24 foot enclosed with a 69 3200 # abody inside at 70mph. It was a 2500 HO quad cab auto with 3.7x gear. Wish I still had it! It had way more go than the 95 I have now.

Congrats on the 'new to you' tow rig. My tow vehicle doubles as my daily driver...an 04 High Output 4x4 with a 6spd manual trans. I was a juvenile and removed the silencer ring out of the turbo. Everybody thinks the truck is all fixed up as a result. (Turbo spooling up is very noticeable now.) It's stock other than the too-big exhaust that was on there when I bought it. I painted that flat black so it is not as noticeable.

IMO the most important thing with the 03 and later common rail diesels is fuel cleanliness/dryness. I've been a dealer tech since 1988, between 1989 and 2002 I saw maybe 2 or 3 engines out of a CTD. Between 03 to present I've seen at least 20 engine failures. Mostly caused by dirt or rust in the injectors causing them to stick fully on, toasting the motor to varying degrees. I'm pretty sure thats what happened here: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post6492705So the moral of the story here is buy good fuel, change your filter regularily, and use the water drain on the bottom of the filter AT LEAST at every oil change.

... It is really fun passing the other brands, especially the V10, on the hills
Now Cab, my V-10 pulled as well uphill as my (stock) CTD (towing the same camper)- it just did it at 7.5 mpg instead of 13.
Tim
I had the exact same experience. I have a 98 24valve now.I put bigger injectors, exhaust and a quadzilla box in it, now it blows the V10 away. AND it still gets 13mpg, even towing an almost 15,000lb trailer!

Hmmmm... maybe I need to look into a box for mine. I've heard if I don't go too crazy with it mileage (and power [Tim Taylor voice] Ohhohhohh, more power... [/Tim Taylor voice] ) will increase but if I get too wild with it, it will puke the trans.

The 48RE trans (03.5 to 07) will take a "little" abuse from mods. The 47RE or older RH for that matter, were a HUGE weak link. I smoked two stock torque converter in my 01 with a basic Edge EZ chip. I had a spare 47RE that I put $1400 into (triple disc converter, all new bearings and thrust washers, new input shaft, valve body kit, clutches/steels). I have 80k on that trans and it will hold my power level just fine....matter of fact I ended up putting some bigger injectors in it and that increased my mpg. The BIGGEST issue with these trucks are they are waayyy detuned in stock form so that the drivetrain will survive. Many people spend the $400-$600 for the "instant" hp/torque upgrade of a downloader that takes 5 minutes to install, but won't go the extra mile to insure that the trans has also been upgraded. That's a big reason that the transmissions got such a bad rap in these trucks.
....I'm waiting for someone that will make a stand alone trans controller for the 68RFE (six speed behind the 6.7 engine) so that I can look at sticking one in my 01.

I've been told that if I do put a tuner on mine, as long as I stay around 100-125 hp the trans will be fine. True? (Sorry to derail your thread, Eric, but with knowledgeable people chiming in I just have to ask. )

If anybody can do it these guys can! Doesn't list any Dodge stuff but the technology is there. http://www.powertraincontrolsolutions.com/

I wouldn't be too worried.... just don't pull grades at lower rpms as the downloader usually brings more fueling in down low.... Although that does bring to mind the 04 we have in the shop right now that was only equipped with an Edge EZ and all the torque converter lugs are sheared off. Kind of odd.

This is my daily driver and let me tell you it gets a little old. I put about 200 miles a day on it and it does good but it will wear your butt out. Congrats on the truck by the way .
I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't want to drive my 01 CTD truck as a daily driver around here Eric. My dentist would get even more visits to replace fillings it jarred out. Maybe the newer body style rides better.

They are fun trucks but really hard on the old body parts, Not the truck but mine. That is why I got mine for sale now. Can't afford to have the big dude to just pull a trailer and then sit.
I just got mine inspected and I put a whopping 2,100 miles on it last year, mostly from pulling my camper or boat or hauling firewood. I never had my car trailer hooked to it.

i just test drove a trade in at the dealer.. super clean 04 4x4 longbed 4dr auto..CTD Truck is perfect for me.. however..it had a Vibration..i could feel it in the wheel, floor and gas pedal.. at aroung 1200rpm.. i drove the truck..and it was most noticeable at a steady 60mph... Felt like ("do you remember those wind up toys with the spinning disc inside to propel it?" when those bearings would go bad and it would vibrate/harmonics..and it wouldnt work anymore?) thats the kind of vibration..felt like it was pulling the truck down..
Maybe trq converter? or trans? they put it in the service dept..I hope the salesman keeps me informed..I really like the truck otherwise.
sorry Eric for highjacking.. chepast

That's too funny prostock.... I quit racing in 08 and have only been logging 3k a year on my 01. Luckily I'm watching the empty house next door for my neighbor and it lives in his garage.
LOL! Mine normally lives at the bottom of my neighbors driveway. They like it there because it makes it look like they are home when they aren't (they travel and have a place in Florida).
Especially in the winter, it could disappear and I wouldn't noticed for a month or two. Its never seen a salty road. Its paid for, and when I need it its nice to have.

i just test drove a trade in at the dealer.. super clean 04 4x4 longbed 4dr auto..CTD Truck is perfect for me.. however..it had a Vibration..i could feel it in the wheel, floor and gas pedal.. at aroung 1200rpm.. i drove the truck..and it was most noticeable at a steady 60mph... Felt like ("do you remember those wind up toys with the spinning disc inside to propel it?" when those bearings would go bad and it would vibrate/harmonics..and it wouldnt work anymore?) thats the kind of vibration..felt like it was pulling the truck down..
Maybe trq converter? or trans? they put it in the service dept..I hope the salesman keeps me informed..I really like the truck otherwise.
sorry Eric for highjacking.. chepast
Maybe a broken crank at the harmonic balancer? I have a buddy that had an 04 do that to him, twice!

If the vibration was only when it was moving could have been a bad u-joint. Know of a few this happened too and they feared the worst only to find a simple fix.

Just put a new belt on it today and got rid of the annoying sqeaking sound.. Going to have to put some nerf bars on it so Heather can get in and out Look's like it could use front pads ...they are close...and it will get an oil change and fuel filter on Friday...

I put the nerf bars on mine too. Makes it easier to get in and out of.
Get fleetguard filters!
Make sure you get a can of diesel so you can fill the filter housing, if yours is like my 2001. It will be a [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] to start after changing the filter.

ok brought truck home for the night.. the mopar technician said it had a performance programmer that was removed..and the fuel pressure was set up way too high..and timing was 26* retarded..? he said he reset it back to stock...the noise/vibration is less noticable..but still there. it does need front u joints but i dont think this is the issue...it makes the same vibration at lower speeds as it does at higher speeds and seems to be throttle imput related..? feels like a hydrolic pump vibration...like power steering.the power steering is fine..but maybe its trans pump or high trans fluid/pump pressure?
You guys that tow...Do you use the Tow/Haul setting? what the heck does that actually do.. Other than kick the truck out of overdrive..? you can't actually tow on the highway with it on do you? it leaves the rpms way up crazy high..i cant imagine towing long distance this way...what gives?
