I had the exact same experience. I have a 98 24valve now.I put bigger injectors, exhaust and a quadzilla box in it, now it blows the V10 away. AND it still gets 13mpg, even towing an almost 15,000lb trailer!

Hmmmm... maybe I need to look into a box for mine.
I've heard if I don't go too crazy with it mileage (and power [Tim Taylor voice] Ohhohhohh, more power... [/Tim Taylor voice] ) will increase but if I get too wild with it, it will puke the trans.

Tim

The 48RE trans (03.5 to 07) will take a "little" abuse from mods. The 47RE or older RH for that matter, were a HUGE weak link. I smoked two stock torque converter in my 01 with a basic Edge EZ chip. I had a spare 47RE that I put $1400 into (triple disc converter, all new bearings and thrust washers, new input shaft, valve body kit, clutches/steels). I have 80k on that trans and it will hold my power level just fine....matter of fact I ended up putting some bigger injectors in it and that increased my mpg. The BIGGEST issue with these trucks are they are waayyy detuned in stock form so that the drivetrain will survive. Many people spend the $400-$600 for the "instant" hp/torque upgrade of a downloader that takes 5 minutes to install, but won't go the extra mile to insure that the trans has also been upgraded. That's a big reason that the transmissions got such a bad rap in these trucks.

....I'm waiting for someone that will make a stand alone trans controller for the 68RFE (six speed behind the 6.7 engine) so that I can look at sticking one in my 01.

I've been told that if I do put a tuner on mine, as long as I stay around 100-125 hp the trans will be fine. True?
(Sorry to derail your thread, Eric, but with knowledgeable people chiming in I just have to ask. )

Sorry I should add I have a triple disc billet convertor and BD valve body for durability. The Dodge trannys do have a bad rep but I have noticed a great deal of failures are actually caused by the convertor piling up first.

If anybody can do it these guys can! Doesn't list any Dodge stuff but the technology is there.

The reason for the mid-year change(04.5) was that Ford had higher HP ratings so chry/cummins changed the turbo to boost HP numbers higher than the Ford (Marketing ie 'mines bigger than yours').
This is why when you buy a turbo back exhaust kit, you have to specify 04 or 04.5 and newer.

Sorry to sidetrack OP, nice truck.

Good Luck

I wouldn't be too worried.... just don't pull grades at lower rpms as the downloader usually brings more fueling in down low.... Although that does bring to mind the 04 we have in the shop right now that was only equipped with an Edge EZ and all the torque converter lugs are sheared off. Kind of odd.

....and I can't believe that we've had to chat about diesel krap for two days and still no report on how this "alleged" new truck pulls a trailer. I'd think if he had REALLY bought a truck we'd heard something by now.

We had snow over the weekend J... ...although I did use it to move the trailer after doing the multi car shuffle in my driveway. Hope if the weather holds out to go to Farmington NC for a race on Thanksgiving

Best of luck with your new truck... How big is your trailer that you are pulling? Is that a 6 1/2ft bed or 8ft bed?

04.5 2500 Cummins.....230k on the clock...rust free VA truck. I want to thank member VanishPt for checking it out for me. I bought it on his recommendation after he met with the owner. Just as descibed and the former owner even drove 4 hrs to get it within 2 for me I can hardly wait for next season. ...it will be my daily driver though

This is my daily driver and let me tell you it gets a little old. I put about 200 miles a day on it and it does good but it will wear your butt out. Congrats on the truck by the way .

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't want to drive my 01 CTD truck as a daily driver around here Eric. My dentist would get even more visits to replace fillings it jarred out. Maybe the newer body style rides better.

Newer style does ride better. Longer rear leaf springs. Also, you don't need more than 45psi in the rear tires when doing "daily" duties which helps the ride out too. Always 65psi in the front.

They are fun trucks but really hard on the old body parts, Not the truck but mine. That is why I got mine for sale now. Can't afford to have the big dude to just pull a trailer and then sit.

I just got mine inspected and I put a whopping 2,100 miles on it last year, mostly from pulling my camper or boat or hauling firewood. I never had my car trailer hooked to it.

That's too funny prostock.... I quit racing in 08 and have only been logging 3k a year on my 01. Luckily I'm watching the empty house next door for my neighbor and it lives in his garage.

i just test drove a trade in at the dealer..
super clean 04 4x4 longbed 4dr auto..CTD
Truck is perfect for me..
however..it had a Vibration..i could feel it in the wheel, floor and gas pedal..
at aroung 1200rpm..
i drove the truck..and it was most noticeable at a steady 60mph...
Felt like ("do you remember those wind up toys with the spinning disc inside to propel it?" when those bearings would go bad and it would vibrate/harmonics..and it wouldnt work anymore?)
thats the kind of vibration..felt like it was pulling the truck down..

Maybe trq converter? or trans? they put it in the service dept..I hope the salesman keeps me informed..I really like the truck otherwise.

sorry Eric for highjacking..

LOL! Mine normally lives at the bottom of my neighbors driveway. They like it there because it makes it look like they are home when they aren't (they travel and have a place in Florida).

Especially in the winter, it could disappear and I wouldn't noticed for a month or two. Its never seen a salty road. Its paid for, and when I need it its nice to have.

Maybe a broken crank at the harmonic balancer? I have a buddy that had an 04 do that to him, twice!

If the vibration was only when it was moving could have been a bad u-joint. Know of a few this happened too and they feared the worst only to find a simple fix.

Congrats on that truck, you will wonder what you did with out it!

I special ordered our 2004.5 the first day ordering was allowed back then here in California as I anxiously awaited an HO version. It is a loaded (minus the leather, didn't want that) SRW 3500 6 speed 4x4. I am lucky enough to run it just for pleasure and towing as I have a work truck to wrap up work miles, just turned 79k, great truck with even better mileage with 19-20 easily in mixed city / highway driving.
