I am painting my 1971 'Cuda in-violet purple and the front grill body color except inside the D shapes.

Should the front filler piece between the lower front valance and the front bumper be painted gray?

I have seen some painted black but I think it would match the unpainted parts of the grill better if it where that light argent gray.

What are your thoughts?

Anyone have any pictures?

1971 'Cudas with painted grills - should have painted inserts.

Here's an original paint EV2 - "tor-red" part.

I've had 2 Tor Red 1971 cudas with body color grills. One had a body color lower insert, the other was the silver. My guess is that the silver one could have been a replacement, but I don't know.

Maybe if I knew which insert panel it was (they were removed and mixed up with others) I could look for some markings that would indicate whether it was assembly line or 'over the counter'.

Anyone have any idea what those markings/numbers might be?

Would it be too taboo if I did paint it light gray?

Paint it any color you like, but if your looking for the correct application, body color grilles had color keyed lower valance inserts as a general rule, I'm sure there were exceptions on the line though

Not sure why'd you want that piece to stand out if you paint it gray.

If you're gonna paint the grille, I'd paint the filler body color.

I think it gives the car a bit more character. It breaks up the color and kind of ties in with the gray D shapes in the grill.

Dunno but my 72 `Cuda has a rare factory body color grille (standard only Cuda models in specified colors with G36 painted racing mirrors)and in 72 the lower grille should be argent.

Hey, you found a pretty good picture of my goal.

That picture is what my car is going to look like when I am done. The only difference that I can see right off is mine will not have the rear trunk lid wing and mine will have the front bumper driving/fog lights. Other than that, same purple with white billboard exterior and white interior.

Cool find.

I had kind of a novel idea. I have a 2011 Dodge Challenger that is painted Billet gray. I was thinking about painting the 'Cuda filler and grill D shaped parts with that same paint.

Any thoughts on that?

Here is a picture of my Challenger so you can see the Billet paint as a reference.

I want to use the PSC paint code Billet gray on the front valance filler and the D shapes in the grill. I think it is a fairly close match to the light argent gray and it would tie both of my cars together.

What do you guys think?
