Great information you guys. I love this part of moparts. I learn a ton every time I hop on the Race forum!!! The 516's are in better shape than the 346's and will just need a quick cleaning and reassembly unless they are warped. Not too sure how stout the springs are yet. The only thing bugging me is the pistons. I don't want to dump money into this thing if I could be building my stroker but that will push the finish of the car until august. If I can squeeze 425 hp out of this motor, I would be happy. With the low gears, I will be able to lots of tire damage with that.

Will I kill performance with the 2" headers?

425 is going to be a stretch with that low compression and yes the 2" headers will kill the bottom end. Buy a set of the cheapie summit 1 3/4's for that .

If I were you I would disregard any advice you have gotten about not using hardened exhaust valve seats. I have had it happen to me, and I've seen it happen to other heads. It's possible that it may not happen to your set, but to be on the safe side I would go with hardened seats. The factory didn't put hardened seats in the later model heads for nothing.

I'll have the valve seats checked once I have the block figured out and let you guys know what I've got. I can't imagine someone stuffing big valves in and doing all the bowl work and not putting in a new set of seats. But then, who would have expected half my rings to be upside down and backwards???

I’m listening.

I agree with Dog . Bolt them on and go. For what your doing, they will work just fine.

I also agree that 1 7/8 headers will much improve thar combo. Save tje tti s for the 451.

Good luck .

Exactly what heads have you had it happen to and what kind of vehicle were these heads installed in and it's usage?

The later heads have hard seats partly because of metallurgy change that occured , they changed the blocks so one can only assume the heads were of the same mix?

I'm not saying not to do it , it's money well spent but for a PLEASURE usage vehicle that doesn't get pounded on daily for extended periods it's not a must.

Putting in bigger valves gives the seat fresh material that hasn't been beat by a valve for thousands/millions of cycles ...

Lindy I looked at your pictures , those closed chambered heads do not have hard seats installed . Also ditch the springs between those rockers in favor of a solid spacer and set the side clearance with shims ...

I agree with John.Hardened seats arent a requirement. How many miles do most of these cars get?Usually not many. Not compared to what was a daily driver getting 100K or better on them.My 516s were done probally 12 years ago no seats installed. Now on my kids 413 they get quite a bit of miles. No problems at all.He does run race gas as I did at times but usually just 93 octane from the pump.Rocky

My 69 RR, with a .060 over 383, pistons .065 in the hole, ran 13.08 at 105 mph................

it had bowl ported 516's with the 1.74 exhaust valve added.

NOT bad since it had a terrible 1.99 60' time. More hook/bite (better burnout) and with that mph 12's are not a problem.

The shortblock had unknown mileage since it came in the car with no known history. Pistons rocked in the bores at TDC.

The car weighed 3610 lbs with me in it.

Yep, 516's are a boat anchor/doorstop, BUT for an econo mild to warm application (especially a 383) they have their purpose.

Same, same. My street 383 is built the same, in a 4000lb race wt Charger and ran a 13.1 at 105. I'm figuring its making 425.
Mine are shaved .060 with pistons .080 down,, can't run it on regular.

Can't run it on regular ??? It's not like it has sky high compression.

Our best pump is 91 oct shell. Anything less and it pings and knocks down low,, hard to shut down.
Just remembered the last motor I had in my race car was a 76 440 with bone stock 516s (lumps in the ports etc, but big ex valve) ran 12.27 at 109 in a 3450lb b body. The cam was only good till about 57-5800.
Put a shot to it before we yanked it and yielded 11.46 114.8 (125hp)
