I finally got the cam out of the engine I bought. The engine is a rebuilt 1974 440 with steel crank. One cylinder had water in it but it looks to be a low mileage rebuild, albeit it came out of a mud bog truck that broke and rolled. The end of the cam has alphabet soup stamped into it. No brand names. 272 P 64-1 1424 8A5H  I googled the crap out of it. The only cam I could find was a CamCraft.com. You can see the specs on the cam under letter "C". It's labelled 21-1424  I plan to put a call in to them unless one of you motorheads can ID this baby. So if these are the true numbers, how aggressive is this cam? Is it like the old 282 MP purple Hyd cam? Lift, duration, lobe separation, it's stuff I have heard for years but it's still greek to me. Lindy

Looks like stock cam markings to me, or maybe a MP grind also. They really dont have any kind of ID with numbers... They have stamps and marks, but I havent ever figured out what they mean.
Take some calipers and measure lobe lift... Pretty simple, and you will get a idea of what it is.

Called CamCraft. Nope. They don't claim it.  They usually don't mark their cams. The owner said that it's likely a custom grind/regrind and said that I need to look at the casting for marks but even that won't likely tell the story. Might be an older Crane Cam number set, referring to the 1424. Suggested I go to someone with a "Cam Doctor" to have it measured. I'm going to call my engine guy and see what he's got. Maybe do the calipers and dial indicator for fun. Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Lindy

In all honesty though do you really plan on re using it? If its a solid flat tappet, or hydraulic cam is it worth saving especially if you dont know what specs is ground on. I guess for what Comp will sell you a nice cam and lifter set for I would just buy a new one, but if your on a tight budget I understand that also.

Its odd they don't claim that cam, The 272 is the Adv. Dur., The 1424 is the core #, Its ironic that on there cam chart it shows the 1424 as a .272, i'd measure the lobes.

If it's a single bolt camshaft, it could be one of the old Crane private label hydraulic lifter grinds. Duration at .050" would be 214 intake, 224 exhaust. Timing at .050" is: Intake opens 0 BTDC, intake closes 34 ABDC, exhaust opens 49 BBDC, exhaust closes 5 BTDC. Advertised duration is 272 intake, 282 exhaust, at .004" lobe lift. Lobe separation is 112 degrees. Lobe lift is .2947" intake, .310" exhaust, providing a gross valve lift with 1.5:1 rockers of .442" intake, and .465" exhaust. Regards, Chase

Thanks! I hadn't checked back to this post for a couple days. I am always astounded by the wealth of knowledge here. I am ditching the cam for something more aggressive. The block goes to the engine builder this week to see if the bore can be fixed. With me luck.
