Hi, I am ready to strip, prime, and body-fill my '69 Super Bee. Is there any body fillers that do not eventually shrink down the road? Also, I just put new AMD quarter panels on it, so I thought about using either USC Dura-glass, or all-metal underneath the final coat of body filler where the factory leaded joints are. Additionally, I would like a recommendation on an initial primer for the bare metal that would kill any rust that is lurking somewhere in seams or wherever. Thanx, Steve

do yourself a favor and lead the joints, keep body filler to a minimum, Eastwood.com has plenty of suppliies to accomplish this,....as far as paint prep, you'll get 12 answers to that one question,...but I'll recommend what I prefer, strip the car to bare metal, etch-prime with Dupont VARI-PRIME, I would double coat it, do not sand, then coat with Dupont 2K ureahane primer, block sand, recoat, block until straight, paint......

Mike,
have you actually used any of the eastwoods body solder?

I've heard of horror stories with paint reactions to it recently.

Bill,....I've used them, If anyone haz had reactions later in their paint, I would think it was poor prep of the area, if you don't leach out the tinning butter (acid) it could come back to bite you later, esp if you open up the solder with a file/sandpaper, and leave the surface coarse, acetone/laquer thinner the lead joint,...even factory lead joints if they've been ground/sanded apon

Mike

I agree; lead does not shrink.

Not to hijack, but if a filler is used and then shrinks moderately... can a sand/buff permanently erase the evidence or is it just temporary as perceived in my experience??

If things are still moving around cutting it flat & buffing it out is only temporary.... If your patient I prefer to cut it open & wait for solvents to gas out.... Plastic filler moves allot less than primer...

What about a year and a half of sitting in a shop with varying degrees of 30F to 120F?

It wasn't cut while sitting there, but shouldn't that about do it for gassing out?

I have watched what was a perfect black paint job become not as perfect just sitting there. I'm almost done with reassembly, so I'm hoping I can go back and do spot buffing to get it perfect-ish again...

So then, if filler shrinkage is an issue, a shop with a quick turn-around time is not such a good idea? Or how about these TV shows that do body, filler and paint work in just a couple of days?

I've seen a couple Overhaulin cars a year later... Still looks ok but you can see plenty of stuff that has moved... Allot of normal people would never see it but people that spell 10K plus on body & paint aren't the type to not notice paint flaws...

More pronounced flaws you may want to cut with 1500 or 2000 before buffing... Buffing polishes but it doesn't really flatten flaws..

I can't answer the shrinking question other than mixed properly, right temp and not put on too thick, then you shouldn't have a problem. I used fiberglass anywhere I weld after grinding to fill in any holes, pores, etc... then grind it mostly back off before filler. I use epoxy or etch primer before I apply any fillers.

Fillers will continue to "move" for decades, it will be more pronounced on dark coloured cars, that's why I always stress complete replacement of a panel, or skilled METAL reworking of a panel with no fillers,....grafts/patch panels, and bondo carved cars will come back to bite you years later,...just a matter of time

I worked at Muscle Car Restorations fro 6-7 months and there cars are filler from one end to the other. Thick in some spots, they say that's how its done(wrong).

They polyester primed, blocked they used NCP271 for final prime over reduced. To fill in the sand scratches.

Lots of different ways, everyone has a different idea on how to do things!

I used their lead-tin based solder, no problems at all.

Kams, Do you remember what brand of body filler MCR used? I just remembered that in 1978, I bought a 1966 Hemi Satellite that was solely drag raced from the day it was bought new. The rear wheelwells were radiused for slicks. I sold it in 1982 when gas hit $1 per gallon.(stupid me!) In 2005, A friend of mine found it in a field, buried up to the rockers in the dirt...in Buffalo, NY. He bought the bare body shell for $800.00. The filler on the wheelwells was still intact! When he tore into it, it was on there very thick...up to an inch thick in spots, and that was filler with the quality and technology from 1966, and covered with laquer paint! I wonder how the filler survived under those conditions, for that long of time?
