Well, to finish off my brief season, Dad and I loaded up the car and went to one of the last events to be held in Calgary Alberta Canada, at Race City. They will be shutting down for good I hear this year.

The event was "Calgary's Fastest Street Car Shootout". It was a .400 pro tree heads up event. The rules were very simple. First everyone had to meet at Deerfoot Mall in the city. From there we did a mandatory drive to the track with a planned out route and a check stop point. Once at the track, car numbers were drawn at random.

We half way to the track towing the car, we put 8 gallons of 91 octane fuel in the car. We decided to test my street car. We haven't really done much street miles with the car, so what better way then to unload at the track, and drive bumper to bumper rush hour traffic to the meeting place, Deerfoot mall. It was almost an hour of traffic to go about 20 miles. Drove most of it in first gear. The car never went over 190. I was very pleased and surprised it cooled so well. The car has a 18 x 18 brass 4 core rad, a 5 blade stock flex fan about 3" from the rad with no shroud. This is why I was surprised it cooled. Whenever we got going at a bit of a cruise speed it dropped down to 150-160. It has a 180 thermostat. And it was HOT out for around here this time of year (90 F). Total street driving in the car yesterday was almost 2 hours. I didn't lean on it during the cruise since we had 91 octane in it and it is 13.3:1 with cast iron W2's. Haha.

Once at the track, I probably had about 2 gallons of fuel left in the car. We dumped 5 gallons of 111 octane, and got ready for first round.

First round I pulled a procharged 92 mustang on 17" drag radials. He said he had run an 11.30 so far with the car, and was hunting for a 10. He asked a bit about my car. I told him it was a cast iron headed small block all motor, and we should have a close race since I had exhaust on my car now, and track prep wasn't that great. We lined up, my car hooked ok thanks to the 3.23 gears, and he spun. I ran a 10.97 @ 123.5 to his 11.90 @ 117.

Second round comes, and I get paired up with one of my buddies unfortunately. He has a 440 in a 1970 plum crazy Cuda with a Jerico DR4. He knew he had to tree me and got a -.018 red light. He ran a 11.34 @ 119 mph to my 10.93 @ 125.

Third round. I am the only all motor car left. I get paired up with another buddy. Fox body mustang with a Clevland on spray. He cut a .058 to my .208 light. He ran out of bottle half track but still got me. He ran a 10.50 @ 119 to my 10.78 @ 126.

It was the most fun I have had in one night with my car. It's a shame the track is closing down. Figured I would share with you guys though! Street Cars Rule!

Glad you had some fun... its strange that it was running
150-160 with a 180 stat... stat should have closed
and keep the engine at 180... unless your stat starts
to open at 160 and is fully open at 180

Yeah, I thought it was odd, but happy it cooled. I really just expected it to be a head ache on the drive. Haha

I was on mostly 111 octane fuel once racing started. Just the cruising was on pump gas. I might try a meth kit next year and run 94 octane.

Thanks Ron. On the 10.98 run the car did a 1.64, the 10.93 run was a 1.67. Both were in the same lane. Round 3 I pulled the other lane. Car went 10.78 with a 1.59 sixty.

A couple weeks ago on a little bigger tire (27 x 10.5 ET Street) and better track prep, it did a 1.55 once on a 10.70. run.

The ET Street is measured different than the ET Drags. The ET Street, is measured off of the section width, and the ET Drag is measured off of the actual face width of the tire. The 8.5 ET drag is 8.1" face where as the 10.5 ET Street is 8.9". So not a huge difference in width.

I was planning on going to a 4.10 or 4.30 gear this winter, but I think I will go with a 3.7-3.9 gearing. As it is now, when we show up to a marginal track surface, everyone else seems to be skating, and I am spinning very little on my little tires. The converter seems to be really big stall wise. I am getting 4-4500 rpm out of it when it's warm on the foot brake, and once I launch the car it is at 6500+ the whole way down.

Here are some pictures that have surfaced so far....

Rolling into the mall after cruising from the track through rush hour....

Holy mustangs batman...

Pulling into the mandatory check point half way to the track...

Dad visiting with the cops. Lol...

Waiting in the tech line up at the track.

First or second round eliminations.

I hope there is more of these events. Especially now that I know the car cruises like a champ! Haha
