Ok, I am in the process of building a 4 speed tranny for my 68 Charger. I was able to find 3 extra 4 speeds, 2 A-body and 1 B-bodies. I now have 2 each 2.66, 1 each 2.45, and a 3.09 OD gear sets. It was suggested that I want the early A-body 3.09 gear set for my application.

I am running an extremely mild 572 StageV Hemi and 3.55 gears and I don't have tires yet . So from the experience of the Moparts tribe, what should I do? Should I try and trade a gearset? Or do I want to run what I now have? If run what I have, which set and why?

Thanks Tim

I believe the 3.09 is a 6 cylinder gear and not that strong. plusw qa big drop to second.
You have enough torque to sdtsay with a 2.45 or 2.46 there's little difference but a 4.10 gear would be the tickedt

The 2.45 or 2.66 1st gear will be fine for you. Big cubes, lots of torque down low. The 3.09 was a 6 cylinder trans only to get that little thing moving. I don't think it was any weaker than the others per se but you won't need that steep of a 1st, plus as Fred said, there is a bigger spread between 1st and 2nd.

I'm a big fan of the 3.09 low gear for the street, I use 3.23 gears and get the same launch as 2.66 with 3.91's.

Sure there's a big drop between 1-2 but torque covers that.

3.55 gears? 8 3/4? I hope you don't plan on getting too crazy with the clutch and loud pedal.

He's using a 23 spline , he'll probably blow that up before the rear

That's good to hear. Hope your trans lives until you can upgrade it.

I am hoping that I can find one that I can afford, still building the motor right now!

Requires machining and maybe some welding because the 308 bore will hit the bolt holes .

Why do you want to switch to the larger bearing ?

The 3.09 1st gear was also used for some of the 318 cars..

Just my $0.02...
