Now I see I have oil running out of the right header on my new engine. Argh! It must have a torn valve seal on an exhaust valve to do that, the pan evac hose is dry. W5's have those deep cups around the valve spring even though they've been drilled to allow oil to drain out it's not going to drain it all.

I guess worst case scenario is a guide has come loose, it runs fine though and sounds really good. I guess I'll go pull the cover and take a look...

Yeah those spring pockets are deep in the W-5s... I
cut a notch out of mine with the die grinder... I'm
thinking its more like a guide causing that... but
hopefully its just a seal.... but your right... its
always something screwing up

How did the head gasket do that? I think first step is I'll pull the header off and see what tube(s) are wet then I'll know what cylinder(s) to look at. Worst case I have extra gaskets except the head gasket.

Do you run the stock Dia W5 guide? If so the seals dont hold tight and pop off all the time if ya run any kind of valve lift above .650.

Same problem on a set of St6 heads, showed up to be leak between valveguide and head. Showed up on one cylinder, but after testing with kerosene, all of them leaked through. I made special spring cups supporting O-rings pressing between head and guide, have not tested yet.... If you look upon the design, there is not much material between valvespringseat and port. Should have been assembled with a sealing compund. My

Yeah it's a stock guide and the net lift is .698/.714

I've had these heads for a long time without a problem before now. I just had the VJ touched up on the exhaust and 2.08 valves installed in the intakes.

I don't know why they ran a smaller outside Dia guide on stock W5s... We had a problem with the intake & exhaust slippin off, When we went to 11/32 stems we used standard Dia valve guides, Its been a wile but someone on here had a part # for seals that fit tighter.... I think it was Brett in PA but its been years so not sure

I pulled the header off and I can see oil running down the stem of #4 exhaust valve. I can see the guides and it hasn't moved. It's dry around the little bit of the guide that sticks through but the stem is wet and you can actually see the trail it has left going down the stem. So it looks good that it's just the seal.

If anyone knows a better fitting seal I'd appreciate it. I still have not mastered the search function here.

Thanks to all of you for the help.

I took the car to work today to fix the leaking rear housing gasket and was telling one of the body guys about my problem. Well he has a mid 10 second small block Camaro (what else is new) and I guess this is pretty common on the Chevys as well. He says he takes some 80 grit sandpaper and scuffs up the outer surface of the guide where the seal goes on and that gives it something to hold on to. Says it works for him so I guess I'll give that a try and see how it goes. I'll let you all know.

What I've done in the past is use a small pointed
punch on them... give it about a dozen punch marks
(it will displace the metal outwards and leave a
ridge around it) that give the seal bit

That's a good idea too I'm just not sure if I can get in there with the heads on the engine in the car. I really don't want to pull the heads back off.

What I used was a piece of 1/8" stainless steel welding
tig rod... sharpen it to a point... you want to aim it
on a downward angle that way it moves more metal
outwards...if you need to sharpen it a couple of times

If you have a die you could run that around the guide if you have room
Using a punch could deform the guide I.D.

If you need seals shoot me a PM, I have 1,000's of seals to fit any stem/guide/spring combo
