I built a 340 stroker (408). Used a 292 duration 508 lift hydraulic cam, with edelbrock heads 273 adjustable rockers with the stock pushrods (the 273 was a solid lift motor). Wiped out the cam in 500 miles. Why do you think the cam wiped out? Are the push rods to long for hydraulic lifters?

Did you use a good oil with plenty of zinc or add zinc to the oil? Did you do the standard 20 minutes breakin? If you adjusted the rockers correctly then the push rods wouldn't make any difference.

breakin oil(zinc), moly paste on the lobes/lifter bottoms, spring pressure, breakin procedure, too much cranking on initial fireup, lifters too tight in bores, defective cam or lifters. where are you at with those?

Yes, stock 273 solid lifter push rods are nearly a quarter of an inch too long. You need push rods made for a hydraulic lifter engine using adjustable rockers.

Yes Stumpy did all that

RapidRobert was thinking too much cranking on inital fireup, but everything else was done or not defective

Moparforlife thought that may be it...Do you know how to find correct push rod lenght?

Also since the hydraulic lifters were galled so bad have now bought solid lifters. Am thinking of going with solid lift cam now.

When you mock up clean each bore/lifter with brake kleen & lightly lube the bore walls & lifter outsides with WD40 then raise each lifter off of it's lobe with your finger and let it go and it should fall back onto its' respective lobe with a resounding "thunk" and if not it needs to be honed as it is TOO TIGHT and will not rotate properly which is CRITICAL

Ideally you should use an adjustable checking pushrod to determine the correct pushrod length. If you haven't cut the block deck too much you can use '70 TA pushrods. They used adjustable rockers with hydraulic lifters in these engines. As Moparforlife said solid lifter pushrods are way too long. The cup on the 273 solid lifters is set much deeper in the lifter body than it is on hydraulics.
