I had mocked up my 416 with some old scuffed up bearings
(I didnt have the new bearings yet) and I felt a snug
spot in the couple of times I turned the crank...
I thought it was the old bearings... I put the new
bearings in and checked it again... it gets snug, so
I took it over to crank shop... well he called me today
to say the front is bent between #1 and #3 mains so
I asked if he could straighten it but he prefered to
cut it... its a new Scat/Mopar 4" that I've had for
a couple of years... it was .002 out .... I dont
know if I'll ever get this engine together... I should
have gone smaller and used my billet crank thats
just sitting around... that one is a 3.79 and I could
have off ground it

That sucks...
Was it just a high spot out of round? You think he can just cut the high spot down, without cutting the other area of the same journal, or will he just turn the whole crank down some?

Sounds like yours might have come out of the same batch as mine. Mine had a tight spot, but was within factory spec for both clearance and run out. I used it as is with no problem, but it's a street motor. I probably would have turned it if I wouldn't have had the bearings already, or if I had racing aspirations.

I just told him to cut it .010... so now I need a
set of new bearings... no big deal I have a few engines
with stock mains so I can use the bearings... I just
want this thing to spin freely

A good crank shop should be able to straighten it to get less than .001 run out Even if it is a cast crank

doesn't sound like it's just a high spot. even if it was, you can't really grind just one spot on a journal.

Bob, did Brian ever get a hold of you on those heads?

I have a 3.55 stroke MOPAR crank bought it out of a running engine. Just a couple passes on it. The guy must have dropped it because it is bent. It will not turn at all with all the main bearings in. Moldex said they could straighten it. happens all the time. Would not need turning at all.

Im quite sure you are having the whole assembly balanced...

I have an Eagle crank in my 499,,,everything was balanced and checked out except the flange...would you believe it was 150 thousandths to thick and caused the converter to eat the hardened pump drive...thought I had the clearance,..

good thing you caught it...

these cranks are Chinese forgings..aren't they suppose to be machined here?

Had similar problems with a brand new MP 4" steel crank a few years ago. It was .0005" too large AND .0005" out of round,,,,turned mains .011" to get true and oil clearance. It has been run for over 10 years now with no problems. Seems a shame to have to work on a new crank...especially AFTER all had been balanced. They offered to replace it,,but,,it had been balanced and I decided to keep it and repair it.

Yeah I already had it balanced... still no problem
with the balance... this work is being done to the
mains so that wont change

Well that sucks Mike, but sounds like you already took care of it. Wonder if it got dropped sometime before you got it, the way the front is off slightly it almost sounds like it got hit on the end.

Does this happen often w/ Scat cranks? I was going to order one today, until I read this.

Would I have better luck with a K1?

Kinda whizzes ya off, even if they are cheaper cranks.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

I cant say for fact... most of my SB stuff is 3.79
billet cranks... this is the first 4" forged stuff
that I have used

Sorry to hear that Mr P, Im really thinking that all these cranks are just the luck of the draw, like a water pump from a parts house most are right, some are not.

I just had a K1 that was out of spec and a scat that had to be exchanged in the past year.

People dog even eagle forged cranks, ive used to that checked out good, one has broken 4 mopar 4 speeds, 2 were liberty converted, the same crank made it through a nitrous issue, a hydrolock issue cought at startup and idle, and now has been hit with a 275 shot on a controller, and this last time apart magged fine and is still on the 3 year old calico coated bearings and spins like its on roller bearings.

Would I buy another eagle crank today...id have to think it over as there steel crank now seem to cost like the others, scat, K1 and I feel the overall chance of getting a better quality unit overall would be btter with scat or K1.

Ive been looking alot at the MP cranks going around for sale and have wondered for the lil extra cost thay ask for maybe the quality might be a bit better, but now I wonder and revert back to the luck of the draw thought.

I just popped for the very budget minded offset crank and older heavy pistons, oem rods listed on here for $200 bucks I thought id roll the dice in an old school build to see if kept under 6k and 500hp which will tell me if some of these $1500 cast stroker kits are just overpriced junk when the same can be acheived with almost oem parts.

Back to the MP cranks, the cost is more, and maybe yours did get dropped along the way prior to you getting it or just a glitched crank...

I wonder if and what some of these companies internal records would show on quality control issues during the whole process as well as the return/exchange failure rate, ect...

Anyways, sorry for the lil rant...you will get it sorted out, you always seem to fix every issue in short order

I'm of the opinion that scat cranks are pretty good pieces.
I've bought a cast 4 inch from them and also a forged 4 inch superlight which is a gorgeous piece for the money.

Both were well within spec. I agree with a previous gentleman's post regarding luck of the draw. To think there is ANY company that can keep tolerances we demand ALL THE TIME in mass produced stuff is impossible. Mistakes will be made and there will be inconsistency. You can't avoid it.

But in reality, this is NOT A PROBLEM within reason and is why we check things in the first place.

As far as brand goes...individuals often dont want to admit their high dollar piece came out of spec...I recommend asking a machinist since they look at a crank for what it is and not the logo etched on the weight, and it's their job to make it fit. They will likely give you a far more unbiased opinion.

ALL Chinese cranks I use get drop shipped right to the crank grinder-then to my shop. I'd say that it's pretty common to have issues. 80% need some sort of rework. Part of the deal.

Mr.P did your crank grinder dial off the mains or did he go off the seal and the gear? Reason that I'm asking is that I sent 3 cranks back last year that had a 0.020" runout on the gear. (340 mains)

if the machine has chucks, you go off the seal area, not the mains. on certain cranks we change over to centers. can't get any more true to the centerline than that.
i know scat had some issues awhile back. i think it might have been Ryan J that said he wasn't going to use them anymore. i'm sure he'll correct me if i'm wrong.
we've literally used and sold pallets of K-1 cranks and rods and out of all those i've only ever had one with an issue that was actually pretty minor. no matter, they propmtly replaced it and ate the shipping both ways, as they should.
don't even want to get started on the problems with the eagle cranks throughout the years.
(DISCLAIMER)we sell all three of those brands, so there is no bias in my reply.

I should have put it in my lathe to check it but I
would have ended up taking it the crank place

Yeah, then how many of the cheap assses are going to run $2,500. Callies or Crower cranks in their motors? Answer? just about nobody!

Its unfortunate, but that is how it goes.....

HPMike, could you explain that statement, ive a callis in my 452 small block stroker, it works no better or no worse then the china crank in a stronger motor, and was a grand more...If my needs called for a billet crank id have one but at a certain power level many are happy with the china cranks that may need a lil work.

Other then getting the china steel cranks in spec, we dont see many posts of them failed or a holed block so again for certain.....

What I dont get is we dog the china cranks but the chebbie and ford folks seem to have no issues with the eagle kits, scat parts and make big power on them, are us mopar people just picky or what....

Ive never been told my steel china crank was my wink link in some builds, its always the "stock block" issue.

All Chinese cranks should get drop kicked back to china,.... Just my opinion

Simple

Everyone wants to play Mr Patriot and shitt all over the Chinese parts and thats fine. I think it sucks, too. But at the same time, people are blowing up 8.75 rears because they dont want to spend a few extra dollars on a Dana.

My only point is that I wont even take one of these cranks out of the box without first sending it to my crank guy. It's fine. The few extra $$ added on to the price is more than worth it to the customer to get it as good as it can be. Some(few) are perfect, and that is great. And let's face it, the average bread and butter 600 horse stroker build doesn't need a premium crank. Unfortunately we don't have an option of a US made and machined entry level product.

So Quick77, it seems like we are on the same page, no? Sorry to the OP for his trouble. It's never fun when it turns out that way.

For me in my build I wanted some extra cubes for
torque so I went with this 4" MP crank... being I
was a Chrysler employee I got a super buy on it...
once its corrected I'm sure it will be fine for my
SB... I'm only going to make about 550 hp... but I
did spent the savings getting it fixed

I'm a little confused. How will cutting it straighten it? All I'm seeing happening is you will have a bent crank that will turn freely in your engine

Basically yes, it'll be bent by .002 but the mains
will be on centerline.... I can live with it out by
.002 at the counter weight

once it's ground it'll run true to the centerline. when grinding a bent crank, both the rods and mains get ground to effectively make ALL the journals run true again. the balance on that should be checked again also.

Mr P is the crank you have one of the scat 9000 series cast versions? I just saw mancini has them for 300 bucks but probably not worth it if you need to have a bunch of work done to it.

Interesting read. Surprised no one has mentioned the shipper. I would venture to guess that more stuff gets damaged in shipping than you may think. Just because it went from the "factory" to you doesn't mean 10 other people haven't tossed it around in between. Just sent a box of lifters back to Summit a few days ago. They came out of their factory ( individual ) packaging and were all jumbled together in the bottom of the Summit box. Summit's packaging wasn't that swift, but the box looked like it had been dragged behind the UPS truck for a few thousand miles.

When it absolutely, positively, has to be destroyed overnight you can always call UPS if the Marines are busy.

Part of my plan is to try to buy a crank from closer to home, so it has less transfers from truck to truck and /or less handling.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Humm... Some feedback from that comment Its not like I don't like our Chinese friends.... Its that I like my American friends more, I understand that cheaper Mopar parts are a good thing giving the availability for more people to build sooner or @ all.... But the current trend for American corps. to manufacture in China and market in the USA has become a MAJOR problem for all of US .... Its the American consumer that will decide if this country gets back on track or not.... Chinese parts do make for a lot of cool carnage pic posts over the years... Just another opinion

I have finally decided to put an American to work, even if it is only for a couple hours.

I'm going to buy a Callies, but it's real hard to spend 300 extra dollars when you don't have to.

At least I'll have some piece of mind that I won't be participating in the carnage pics thread.

Well I got the crank back last night and I put it in
this morning... spins nice and free... now I'll check
the clearances and if it shows good then I'll start
the assembly

Same thing here with some brake parts I ordered. Thrown in a flimsy box with those stupid air bag things and parts all over the place. I was convinced I would be missing something through the hole in the side of the box, luckily not. I agree with the shippers being absolutely horrible, but the packing needs improvement as well.

I can totlaly see a crank being damaged this way.

The only aftermarket crank I ever bought was the BPE 4.125 - it was in a double coardboard box, inside was 2 bags of foam - one top and one bottom. It was not OOR when I checked it. I dont know what other manufacturers ship the cranks in but Rod's stuff was packaged right and it helped.

It measured up good... I set it at .002 and .002
(mains and rods) with .007 end play.... I'm sure not
use to 1/16" rings... man do they DRAG... I got 28 ft lbs
to turn the assembly, my race stuff takes 18 ft lbs
EDIT
after playing with it I got the break away torque down
to 24 ft lbs... those rings just drag alot

I don't know Rob but sounds like he runs his business not have somebody else do it. So if a crank get banged up during shipping it is his dollar. Make sense to package well to avoid unneeded expenses.

that's the way they're boxed from China. Many other brands come exactly the same way.

I really dont think it makes any difference if the delivery guy drops the china crank or the american crank they will get bent either way and will cost the same to repair either one! Could someone point me in the direction of the carnage threads with the china cranks that can prove that it was actually the cranks fault. Has anyone ever had to do any work to correct there american made crank?

I can't point you in that direction but if my new stroker blows chunks I'm blaming the crank anyway.

Not like it was the fault of the hack that assembled it.

Well this is what it looks like today... still need
to do some clearance work on the valve covers(they
hit the rockers at the lip)... I will order up the
push rods next week... I'm going to have to use 5/16"
push rods because I'm real close to hitting the intake
ports... and I need to finish the pan

Well this is what it looks like today... still need
to do some clearance work on the valve covers(they
hit the rockers at the lip)... I will order up the
push rods next week... I'm going to have to use 5/16"
push rods because I'm real close to hitting the intake
ports... and I need to finish the pan

Looks really good. I had a set of those super expensive valve covers and I sold them because they were sooo heavy.

Yeah they are heavy... you wouldnt know that they are
alum... I have a set on my W-9 but I milled the top
off(logo and ribs)... this engine is using parts I have
around the shop so it isnt getting anything that cost much

Looks good Mr P

FWIW..... I have all my cranks checked by my crank guy before I do anything with them.. Just peace of mind

This is the first crank I've had any problem with

I've never had a problem either but when I started getting into the R3, now R5 stuff I wanted to make sure everything is right. I've seen the way this stuff is stored and comes from the nascar shops and it's a miracle the stuff isn't destroyed in transport....
