Ola,

I would guess that 2808142 is a lower level part number to the assembly 3417412.

The Bill Of Material for 3417412 might look like this:

3417412 Barracuda Tail Panel Assembly
2808142 Panel
280xxxx License Plate Bucket
0999xxx Square Weld Nuts (2)
1111xxx Sealant

I have an NOS Challenger panel and I'll check it for a similair number but I'll guess that it does not have one since there no additional items needed to make the part.

I dont have a parts book in front of me and having owned a few of these NOS many years ago, I can't recall if they had the holes pre-stamped for the rear molding plastic retainers or did they all come NOS requiring those holes to be drilled for a Cuda model.
If there were the two versions of these panels, one for Barracuda and one for Cuda, it may account for a separate part number for each.
Ola...yours does not appear to have the holes.

Ola,

I checked my May 1970 parts book and it shows the 341 part number and not the 280. The 280 part number is also not in the reference section.

I also checked my NOS Challenger panel and it has BOTH the number stamped and the stenciled on. They match 2963261

Chris,
That is the most plausible explanation. Thank you for your insight.
I thought about this scenario [sub assembly] but did not have the resources (i.e. engineering drawing) to confirm my suspicions.
The license plate section does not have any part numbers stamped. Just: SS-46 1 (?) and the nuts and sealant???
It makes the most sences (and a lot of things in the world today don't). Thank you.

Thank you frank. Looking forward to the info.
How's your 71 V doing?

Terry,
No Sir. No holes. Just a sloppy primer job!
I haven't seen any with the holes pre-drilled. Hummm.

The sub assembly idea for the Barracuda panel, is making more and more sense.
