a 70 cuda has just come into west australia here and the tag shows both j54-sports hood and n96 shaker on it. all numbers match everywhere and i believe the car is legitimate. no buildsheet. build date is jan 15th 1970. has anyone got an answer on how both can be on the tag and why? the tag looks like an original.
all the best

What was the date when the shaker was once again available to order?

J54 is full undercoating with hood insulation. The insulation was deleted with N96 obviously.

the shaker was always available for the cuda-it was not available for the challenger for a few months-i think dec-march.
j55 is undercoating with hood pad-deleted on fresh air hood cars-this definitely says j54 which is sports hood.
thanx

At the beginning of the '70 model year, there was NOT a J54 - "sport hood" OPTION on the Barracuda (BH) or the Gran Coupe (BP).

Once the OPTION was released for BH & BP, the code starts to show up on the fender tags for 'Cuda (BS) models also.
(I'm NOT sure the use of the code was CONSISTANT after that point at either plant "B" or "E")

The multiple use of codes in conjunction with SHAKER (N96) & AAR (N94) hoods only complicates the question & use/non-use of the code.

it`s a hamtramck car-it`s not mine so i can`t disclose too much. the n96 is the only hood this car could come with so i was surprised that it also had j54. i have never seen this-could it be a factory error . assembly line workers would get confused on what hood to put on the car during the body in white assembly.
thanx

Frank,
I have information on many cars with that same information on their Data Plates.
J54 and N96: I think that the dual codes were implemented on or about December 16, 1969. Somewhere in between 0B220059 (only N96) and 0B220065 (both J54 and N96).
There is a point in time when that goes away again and only one or the other hood code is displayed.

it`s good to see that it is not an isolated case- i`m sure the owner will be pleased to hear all is matching apart from no buildsheet and a few incorrect items on the car. it does come with one of those register reports which doesnt have any breakdown of the tag codes-i thought that was wierd-it also states on the report it`s 1 of 368 auto cars...it`s a 4 speed car.
thanx again
frank.

Would it be the EV2 H6X9 D21 P31 Y09 with about 18,000 Kilometers showing? I thought that it may have sold recently. Maybe it went to AU?

Your right. Some of the code books show J54 as the Rallye hood and some show it as undercoating. I've got J54 on my fender tag along with the A57 code for the Rallye package. Since the Rallye hood was standard with the Rallye package I thougth the J54 was undercoating. They must not have listed J55 on the tag. All the hoods must have had the holes for the pad no matter if the cars came with one.

Sorry for posting incorrect info.

i was once told that most tag codes had mainly to do with options that required holes to be drilled on the body before paint.
the car is fc7 v1w and white interior.
thanx again

What was coded on a tag varied by plant, year and even time of year. There aren't a lot of hard and fast rules regarding codes on tags.

Somewhere...sometime....there had to be corporate memos as to what was coded on the tag, why it was coded and when it was coded. I'd sure like to see those documents.

There was no "Rallye" package on a 70' Cuda.
