does any know how to test a fuel tank sending unit before i install it?

hook it up to the gauge wire and ground it.with the key on, check the float range to the gauge.

With an Ohmeter, should register ~10 Ohms when in the full position, ~73 ohms when empty. You can expect to see a little variance in these #'s +/- 5 ohms would be normal for the unit.
