Is anyone using the Lunati Voodoo series 60403 cam (226/234 & 494-513 lift) in a 340/416 stroker or similiar setup? The cam is for a 4" cast crank, 10:1, E-heads w/1.5 rockers, Airgap/750 carb, headers 2.5" full exhaust, 3500lb. E-body, auto (2000-2400 stall), and 3.91, street car. Looking for something streetable and don't need anything radical.

A buddy of mine has the next step down (i.e. 60402) cam in a very similiar spec'd 360/408 stroker motor, in a 3700 lbs, B-body which I'm very impressed by.

The Lunati cam rep. spec. out this cam for my application and I'm interested in what others think.

I've got that cam in my 340. It's a great street cam.
But, I would think with a stroker it is too small.

I have the next one up the 404 in my 408.
I would think you would want to start there, idles fine pulls great but I'm glad I didn't go any smaller such as the 403.

If going with E-heads on a stroker, you'll definitely want to size up to the next one

It'll work just fine. The engine may make more power with a bigger cam, but nothing says you have to cam the engine for max hp.
There is NOTHING special about a stroker in terms of any requirement, it's just the best way to get max displacement out of a particular block. GM engines of the late '60s and early '70s had some notable undersquare bore/stroke combinations, such as the olds 455 which was 4.125 bore and 4.25 stroke. It was like a factory stroker. This engine's hottest factory cam was about 232 degrees @ 50 lift on the intake. As it came in my family's '69 it had a cam with around 200 degrees @ 50 lift. It ran great, loads of torque, just couldn't spin it very fast before it ran out of air.

Most of the people on this board want max or close-to-max hp from their engines and are willing to pay the price for large cams, huge carbs, etc in lost drivability and fuel economy. But if you are building a car that will be driven daily or used for cruising then a huge cam is not appropriate. Shorten up the duration as you have done and gain a drivable car that still can fry the tires with impunity.

R.

should be a great, torquey street motor. I'd expect it to idle pretty smooth (say, 15-17" Hg at ~800-850 RPM) and make a boatload of torque. I'd swagger the HP peak is going to be around 5000 RPM

There was a guy over on the a-body forum running the 60403 cam in a 416 Duster that he says would run low 11s, street strip car with full interior, 727, 3:91s. He said it had very good street manners. My initial plans were to use that cam on my SB stroker. I called Lunati and they thought it would work well. I decided to go with a Crane roller with more lift and duration for my 414.

I can tell you with an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, 750 holley carb, Edelbrock heads, 10.2:1 CR, full 2.5" exhaust, and a crane roller cam (112 lsa, 107 installed, 230/238 @ .050 duration, .528/538 lift 1.5:1 roller rockers) my 365 cid engine (.030 over 360) makes 340 rwhp @ around 5800 rpm (iirc, don't have dyno chart scanned yet or with me) and around 345 rwft-lbs (don't remember torque peak but think it was around 4500 rpm). I pull 13-15 in. Hg vacuum at idle, power brakes still work fine. Hope that helps!

Here is another data point for you. 340/417 stroker motor with an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, 770 Holley Street Avenger carb, Stock 'X' heads, 9.5:1 CR, full 3" exhaust, and a Mopar Performance 484 cam (108 lsa, 241/241 @ .050 duration, .484/484 lift 1.5:1 stock rockers) this engine was chassis dyno'd and makes 375 rwhp @ 5400 rpm (the clutch started to slip so they shut it down, if the clutch would have held I believe there is a little more HP in the motor then what was measured) and 484 rwtq at 2700rpm).

It pulls 11 in. Hg vacuum at idle. I have power brakes and it works fine. The motor has a nice mean sounding idle with a little bit of chop to it.
