47RE it is then. Truck is all original with 92K on it. No mods and lived an easy life by the previous owner. Previous owner had aslo claimed to have changed the fluid & filter.

It was holding 1st gear too long when you initially took off in Drive. It seemed like it would shift after you travled 125' or so. After that it would shift normal without holding 1st.

Yesterday it would not shift out of 1st at all no matter what

Does the APPS (TPS) control the trans shift at all? I had an APPS issue and adjusted it slightly by eye and that took care of my sudden intermittent "no throttle" problem.
I will go out today and see if I can adjust the APPS properly with a meter & see what happens

Appreciate any and all help on this one

Well I adjusted the APPS to spec and no luck

Still stuck in 1st gear

Read something on another forum about the Govenor Pressure sensor and solenoid/transducer causing this issue.

Your thoughts?

how many miles on it? i would check all the fuses, also swap the trans relay with the ac one or something, if that doesnt work, get a new output speed sensor, if thats not it you probably need new electronics in the transmission. 47re's are great, i have one behind my 02 2500 that just dyno'ed at 550 hp and maxed out the tq reading, and thats in street trim. Guess what, its all on stock clutches and being abused for over 60k miles.

the only thing electronic about the 47re is the governor pressure solenoid and sensor and the solenoids that control lockup clutch application and OD application.

The pressure sensor and solenoid are known problems, start there first .

I had a Plymouth Breeze that had a speed sensor go bad and it only had first and reverse. It had two sensors, input and output speed on the transmission. My understanding is that if either of these sensors go bad it will not shift out of first gear. Just a thought.

could be front band or kickdown band mine went bad and it would only shift to second when let off of gas

ck the output speed sensor on the tail shaft.

I just re-built mine last week for a lost OD clutch and this weekend off and on it wanted to delay upshifts, especially the 1 - 2 shift

went out this afternoon and no upshift what so ever. changed the speed sensor and all is good

The sensor depending on what it costs would be wise to try, but I honestly think the front band might have went.

It's possible it wore out and the band anchor fell out and dropped into the pan leaving the band hanging in despair.

If the band isnt worn you can put it back in and adjust it, but usually that happening is a sign the band is gone.

If it is gone, the trans has to come out to replace it and you might as well rebuild the whole thing at that point since it has to come apart anyway. The front pump has to be removed to get to it.

If you decide to rebuild it, have someone here do it if you can.
You'll get a lot better deal and some of the trans shops out there are complete crooks.

I ended up swapping a 727 into my dakota because I hate the 46re.
Electronics are junk IMO.

if it were the intermediate band you would upshift to 3rd at about 35- 40 mph and feel like you are freewheeling in between . it sounds like a gov solenoid and sensor problem , get a scanner on it and look at sensor readings instead of throwing parts at it

First scan it for codes. It only has one speed sensor which is the output shaft speed sensor that tells the PCM the output shaft speed so it can work the gov solenoid. If that sensor is bad it may not shift. We have had alot of problems with the gov solenoids and sensors. As was said if the front band was broke it would just stay in first until enough road speed (from 15 to 25 or so) then shift into third. No shifting at all either the throttle pressure lever is stuck wide open or the gov solenoid and press sensor are bad most likely. But I would scan it for codes first. Ron

This also on a 99 dakota. Sounds similar to your problem.

First I'd like to thank you ALL for your help and imput

Had to take the truck to "The Man" aka tranz shop as it's my driver. Didn't want to just start replacing parts without knowing for sure what it was and time was not on my side.

Ended up it was the speed sensor and some corroded connections
There has to be some way to check this with a meter, no

Not too hateful so I had them do a fluid flush, filter change and adjust the bands while the pan was off.
By the way the pan was real clean inside so I was told

Thanks again all, Greg

there is, take the speed sensor out and put an ohm meter on it. spin the speed sensor, if you get a reading it should be ok. No reading would be dead sensor.

You can't "spin" the speed sensor on an RE, it's just a magnetic pickup that uses the park gear cogs as a reluctor.

Hey all. Im new to the forum. Im having a similar issue with a 2000 ram 2500 4x4 auto 5.9 gas motor. Truck has reverse and 1st gear only. Will not upshift. It has a CEL on i scanned it and it has codes for misfires only no trans codes at all. I just bought the truck knowing it had the trans issues. My question is can it still have this type of trans speed sensor issue without throwing a code? Any help would be great i need to get this thing on the road. Thanks!

Anything is possible.

Generally on an electronic transmission, when a speed sensor goes, the vehicle will go into "limp home" mode. My only experience is with a GM vehicle with a 4L80E, it will start out in First and shift into Second gear, then stay there until you turn the engine off and restart. Then it starts out in First, goes into Second, and stays there again.

When this happened to me a new speed sensor was $28 and could be serviced from the outside of the transmission.

Side note not related to OP question: On transmissions with two speed sensors, the computer looks at input and output speed to calculate if the trans is slipping, as it "knows" the gear ratios and also what gear the transmission is in.

Welcome to the board.

This is a common problem and won't always trip a code; the usual drill is to replace both the governor pressure solenoid and governor pressure sensor...both are accessible with just the trans pan removed.

Some years back, our 99 Dakota was stuck in 1st. It threw codes for the trans sensor & solenoid and I replaced em. Long story short, it turned out the rear o2 sensor was bad, and didn't report the warmed up CC and the mismatch caused it all.

Ken
