Hey guys im having some sort of fuel issue and i need some ideas on whats going on.7 years ago i built a new motor for my Coronet...30 over 440,10:1 Eddy heads 292 purple shaft 750 dp,torker intake,727 reverse manual valve body,3:23 gear, Mopar electronic ignition. I ran the car and it ran 12.38 falling on its face coming out of first gear. Never had time to figure out the problem.Never ran the car again. Fast forward 7 years ( after starting a family). I decided i want to go racing again. Same combo as before accept now it has a Firecore distributor, wires and coil, and an MSD 6al and a quick fuels technology 850 dp. This car has a Carter mechanical pump. Anyway i made some runs today and it ran a pathetic 13.84 falling on its face right after shifting into 3rd gear. So i bumped my timing up and then it ran worse with a 14 something and after i hit 3rd gear everything just goes away. Ive got the pedal burried and its like sombody shuts the fuel off,. but if i ease back into it it comes back. It obviously seems to be running out of gas but is there something else i may be missing? I was told my carter pump isnt up to snuff and i should add an electric one to help. So does it sound like that what the problem is to you guys? Ive never run an electric pump and i really would rather not but if it will fix the problem i will. So what do you guys think?.Joe

Several things come to mind, all of them fuel supply related. Which Carter fuel pump are you you using, stock off the shelf or Hi Po and if Hi po which one part number and if you know is it a two valve or three valve race pump and how old is it?)? Second thing is a plugged up fuel filter or a plug up fuel pick up in the gas tank Maybe a restricted fuel line, like a kink or ? Lots of fuel delivery gremlins out there The hard part or the fun part is figuring out what is causing the problem or problems Are you using all of the stock feul lines and the stock pick up in the tank? If so drain the tank and remove the fuel pickup and look at it very closely for pin holes inside the tank and make sure the line is not plugged up with anything, change the sock and filter also. Make sure that the fuel line is not plugged up either by blowing through it from back to front or vise a versa, once all of the fuel is blown out it should be very easy to blow through it I disconnect the fuel line to the pump and hook up a new piece of flexable fuel line and tighten it down so I can blow through it standing up so no fuel gest into my mouth or on my clothes, saftey first I have seen stock pickups plugged up completely and still start and run, now very well at WOT though You need to know that the motor uses the most fuel in high gear, not in 1st or 2nd gear

Thats it guys? Nobody else has an idea whats going on?
You are running out of fuel. What else is there to figure out? I've had several of those mechanical pumps and never had any luck with them. Go electric, it's the only way to fly.

Do everything Cab suggested. While not ideal, you should be able to run low 12's/high 11's with a high-po mechanical pump. It might be as simple as the pickup being uncovered at WOT, too.

Well i would really rather not put an electric pump on it if i dont have to.Never had one before and have no clue where to even start if i were to get one. would much rather stick with a mechanical if i can.
I understand, but as with anything performance related, one thing leads to another. Compromises need to be made. I gave up trying to use a mechanical pump on anything that's been warmed over around 1979.
Just the heat alone here in Florida can cause unexpected vapor lock even with an electric pump but it's so much more prevelant with a fuel pump that's soaking up engine heat as well. I'm not saying vapor lock is your problem it's probably not, you have a delivery problem. The 3/8 line and pickup should be sufficient but in order to insure an adequate flow of fuel I'd go electric. Carter used to make and maybe they still do a 7 psi quiet electric pump. I used two of them sucking through 3/8 lines and feeding into a single 1/2 line on my 440 Charger years ago. It ran 11.50's and never starved for fuel.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it so you know whats happening... dont guess at it... even if you have a gauge taped to the windshield so you can see it when the problem occurs... might want to change to the bigger needle and seats BUT first put the gauge on

I had the exact same thing happen years ago with STOCK GAS TANK, after having also upgraded it with a 3/8 pickup. Found out the pickup was uncovering under acceleration.
My guess is that there is likely nothing wrong with your fuel pump.
Cheap way to find out if its uncovering is to fill the tank completely full, right to the brim, and see if your symptoms change or at least lessen considerably. My hunch is that they in fact will, assuming the sock isnt plugged up from the car sitting around as long as it has.
My old car( running high tens at the time) i found if i let the tank get even close to only half full, it would do what yours is doing, generally in second, but sometimes in third it would start, roll out of the gas and get back into it, and it would be OK for a bit.Definately fuel slosh
