I used to paint mine semi gloss but all the hi end cars are done in gloss so I switched years back to gloss and am very happy with the outcome. Oh and Eastwood as stated is the way to go. Ron

if the radiators should be gloss from the factory, I would think Glen-Ray would be supplying his units in gloss. AFAIK he is "the" radiator man.

I'll put my money on the OE gold cars and survivors over whatever "the" radiator man is doing.

Dave

Just went out and looked at the 5000 mile survivor, untouched A12 bee. Gloss, no ifs, ands, or buts, about it.

Well there you have it! My survivor 'Cuda has 53,000 miles, but the rad is still gloss black!

I dont believe 40+ year old paint on a radiator is still glossy.

Notice the top scoring OE GOLD Valiant and its semi gloss radiator. BOOM!

You can BELIEVE, but you are wrong. KA-BOOM!
I just told you what I saw on the 5000 mile original car, so all I can say is, it is your right to be wrong.

ANY restored car loses to a survivor. Even if you discount my 'Cuda and the previously mentioned 5000 mile 'Bee, I've seen some pretty mint survivors including Steven Juliano's FC7 '71 Hemi Charger R/T which has been described as possibly the best survivor ever and guess what?...the radiator is gloss black.

Boom on that!

why dont we start clearing the glossy black radiators too that way they will really look good.

I dont know either one of you and wont be taking you opinions as gospel. Until I can warp back to 1970 ill have to go with my opinion.

psst....I still think you guys dont know the difference between semi gloss and gloss.

You believe whatever you like! I can go into my garage and look at my 'Cuda and verify the "glossiness" whenever I like!

As far as not knowing the difference between gloss and semi-gloss; I was a GM guy for many years so I KNOW what semi-gloss looks like! In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of any mopar part that was painted semi-gloss (other than organisol).

The ONE concession I will make is that most of the GLOSS black paint that they used was thin and of poor quality so a nice thick coat of quality gloss black may make SOME parts look glossier than they appear on some survivor cars.....nonetheless, I believe what we commonly refer to as "semi gloss" isn't as glossy as the stuff the factory used and appears incorrect in almost all cases.

....as far as a time machine goes; I'd think a 5000 or 10000 mile survivor with the original rad and paint showing as glossy negates the need for one.

If you had to call it a semi gloss I'd say it would be classed as 90-95% gloss.

I'm looking at pics of some right now, but they aren't my cars and Mr. J's website has been removed from public view so I won't post them out of respect for his wishes. I took a look and I don't have any real closeups of my 'Cuda's rad, but I will take some and post them just for the skeptics.......will take me a bit since my ex-wife has the car at her house for the next couple of weeks.

Went to my library and all the rads in the original road tests of the day look the same, not one flat black rad in the bunch. Of course without seeing the paint formula, the amount of gloss % can be debated to the grave. Anyway for those non-believers, check out "Mopar Muscle Cars" ISBN 0 946489 50 5. It has reprints of road tests back in the day. Go to pages:

10, 26, 32, 51, 58, 66, 87, 96.

Or, "Dodge Dart and Plymouth Duster" ISBN 0- 7603 - 0760 - 1. Compare the factory shot on page 41 to the incorrectly restored car on page 40.

I've got more, much, much more. Magazines from back in the day that numbers in the hundreds. An no, not one flat black Mopar rad.

Sheldon
