I started my 440/543 the other day. 10-1 compression, victor heads long duration solid roller cam. I heard lots of valve train noise. So I adjusted my valves, it helped. My distributor is locked out at 34*, I have some slap/ clank noise. Consistent with rpms and goes away above 3000 Rpms. Is this detonation? If so is it because I have locked my timing at 34 at idle?

It sounds somwhat like piston slap, but I was wondering what the locked out timing at idle would do? It is a very distinctive sound, not a light clackity clack.

How many miles on it... piston slap/skirt slap
usually gets quieter when it warms up.... you
could have a broke skirt(just guessing) start
with the easy stuff like the rockers

It does seem to get a bit quieter when warm, well the pan is coming off since it leaks a bit. Guess I may as well check rods and everything else that I can when I'm in there. Alaowhat do u guys seal ur pans with? Cork? Sealer?

I just use a good RTV with no gasket... put a bead
all the way around get the pan in place with all the
bolts and pull it up so there is about .050 left to
tighten and let it dry over night... tighten it the
next day after it drys

Thanks mr. P. I'll try that.
Detonation under load is more like pennies rattling in a jar? The noise I'm hearing is loose tolerances maybe? And it is not under load. They are Ross pistons... Bout 5 maybe 6 years old.

Get the Fel Pro rubber coated steel center gasket,Pt # 1834 Not cheap BTW I have used all of the standard oil pan gaskets and silicone that is marked Adhesive silicone with really good results also, let it dry and make sure there is NO oil on the gaskets or steel parts BTW, my Ross pistons in my pump gas motor make noise now when cold, they didn't when I first assembeled and ran it. I had it honed and put a new set of standard tension oil rings in it and it started making the noise after that
