Hope this can stay in the race section... I currently pull a 24ft enclosed two axle trailer with a GVW of 9800lbs with a 2500 Megacab Dodge and has a GVW of 9000lbs. I'm looking at a 40ft gooseneck enclosed three axle with a GVW of 15000lbs. Before I commit i'd like to know what legally I need to pull it. IE License, Length, weight and how much difference in pulling from a bumper to a gooseneck. I appreciate any input.
Mike

start your info search at you states DMV not
here. Mainly because so many states are represented by our members whose laws will have some minor differences. States usually don't mess with correctly registered vehicles if from another state.

I have a CDL and it is my understanding under 26000 gvw truck and trailer combined you would not require a CDL.

Getting old just means you were smarter than some and luckier than others.

Anything I've heard is a goose neck or 5th wheel tows much easier than a tag. With the Mega Cab you have a short box, make sure the overhang on the trailer won't hit the cab on sharp turns or backing up and I'd say go for it!

In PA and I think most states 10.000 is the most for a trailer.
You need a cdl at 26,000 combined in PA as well.
The 15.000 trailer would need a cdl class A here.

From the California commercial DMV website...

A commercial vehicle is a motor vehicle or combination used for hire to transport passengers or property or which:

Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more
Is designed, used, or maintained for carrying more than 10 passengers, including the driver
Tows a vehicle or trailer, which has a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more
Transports hazardous materials, which requires placards
Tows any combination of two trailers or vehicle and trailer

Can you register it for 10k? I really don't think you would be over that, what's it weigh empty?

I have a 10,00 GVW 24 FT Pace tag car trailer(wieghs 8600lbs loaded) and a 14,500 GVW 34 fifth wheel travel trailer that weighs 11,000 lbs hooked to the truck. The fifth wheel pulls a lot better than the tag does, especially in the wind. I have a 2006 3500 Ram 4 door 4WHDR long bed single wheel, it stops well with either trailer.

Thanks All! I finally found what i was looking for, According to California DMV to pull a trailer 10,000lbs or up to 15,000 lbs you have to have a fifthwheel recreational trailer endorsement on your c class license which you need to take a "law test" for noncommercial class A license. No Health or Driving test. Cool and thanks for all your input guys!Mopar to Ya!

I have done what your considering. I started with a 26' tag enclosed, pulled it with a 87 ramcharger, like 5 miles each way to Edgewater, then used a 2500 87 dodge truck with a 360. It was not enough truck for that 26' trailer going through the mountains, burnt valves in the 360 plus it was a pretty hairy ride.
Then bought a new 93 3500 4 wheel truck, not a dually. It did a great job with a 454 gas motor. Then put a ball in the bed and bought a 40' gooseneck trailer enclosed. It towed better and easier than the 26' tag. I think your 2500 truck should be alright for a while, depending on where you tow.

Then got a 99 dually new with a 454 and 456 gears. It would pull great at about 6 miles to the gal.
Then bought a 49' trailer and used the dually for about a year, it was way too much trailer for my dually. It did have 3 engines,3 trans, hundreds of clutch plates, couple hundred gals of water and fuel.
Then I bought the toterhome, it'll pull almost anything.
You don't need a CDL because we are racing for fun. There's no sponsor name on my trailer. Recreational use does not require CDL, no matter how big and heavy your rig is.
In Ohio no special license is needed, saddle up and go!!

I have driven coast to coast and have never stopped at a weigh station and have never been stopped for speeding because I don't speed.

Most states tend to vary from one another so start
with your state and any state that you think you might
travel through.... here in Mich our rules are way
different

I haven't personally checked into it since I pull a tag, but a friend of mine was looking to pull a 5th wheel with a short bed. He said he found a 5th wheel "slider" that slid to the back around corners then came back going straight. Don't know the make, but it seemed like a good option.

Thanks Gary, Kick a$$ set up btw. The trailer i'm looing at is very much like that. My truck has a cummins and has more power than i need and I take Everything with me when I go Racing. The biggest problem is I cant take my Golfcart, The 40 footer would really be nice especially when we do the Vegas race and Sanoma Ca Gettin around those places you need a cart and its too big to get in my current setup.

Believe me if I could get it in,on it, apart and reassemble I would. As i said when I go racing I dont go to have issues and throw in the towel.
I bring a couple scooters and everything in my shop. I think thats why all my buddies stopped bringing there own tools!

That's what he said he found out. Although he wound up getting a 1 ton crewcab dually with an enclosed trailer with living quarters in it.
