I just purchased a 1989 Jeep Wrangler S. It was a NY vehicle, so its got rust issues, but nothing a mig welder and a plasma cutter can't handle. I'm going to do a body off restoration, give it a 5" lift, 35" tires, beefier axles, and replace the 2.5 lter 5 speed with a mild 318 and automatic. That's the basic plan at this point. Jeeps and 4x4's are totally new to me, so I've got lots to learn.

Good luck, I am just finishing up my 94 Wrangler, I am from Pa. so the frame was a mess.

The rear frame sections like to rust out where the frame meets the bear brace.

Get your self a quadratrac catalog. They are a good source for jeep parts.

A guy I know here used a rodeo rear dana 44 axel with the factory disc brakes and a dana 44 from a 81 -93 full size wagoneer for the front.

Good luck keep us posted.

Love my wrangler...even with the 2.5; nothing better than top off, doors off cruising on a hot summer day/night.

Like you, also looking at v8 swaps, but I'll probably go the well paved route of a mild SBC/ax-15 5 speed, stock axles, stock size tires. From what I understand, as long as tires are reasonably sized, the stock axles will probably live without too much trouble. There not too much hardcore off-roading where I am either...just the mild fire trail stuff.

But if I can get away with doing a small chrysler for not too much more, will certainly stick to the route too.

Please post pics as you go! Very curious to see how this turns out

LA MoPar can be done as cheap as a Chevy, even cheaper, depending on what you want out of it. A rusted out Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 can also make a good, cheap donor.

Hey Rick, what's up! Very nice Jeep you have there!
scanman70, I hear you on the rust issues. That's why I'm going to pull the body off and replace every badly rusted area with new metal, and POR-15 the less rusted areas. I'm even thinking of ways of applying POR-15 to the inside of the frame rails as well.
Here's a couple pics of my heap. She's beat and tired, but I'll bring her back better than ever!

I think that's what Rick was talking about...
At the moment, I'm envisioning painting it a copper color, with tan interior. But that could change. Whatever I end up with, its got to be a different color combo than what you normally see on Jeeps, yet still be tasteful.
Another goal is to make it the most rust free original body and frame YJ in Florida. I'm determined to eradicate the rust on it.

Copper would look awesome with a tan/creme interior

Glad you said YJ in Florida, mine (son's) is a CJ. We looked at probably 20 Jeeps through Fl/Ga/Al before we bought this one out of Anniston, Al. It is absolutely rust free, a little surface but nothing that will leave pitting. It is already a 360, was originally a 258 but it is a very clean looking swap done apparently many year ago. The only way you know it wasn't born there is the VIN. It is a T4 which I'm not thrilled with right now with an AMC 20 out back and a Dana 30 up front.

Anyway, have fun with your and let me what part of Florida you are in, we may be close.

I'm in Tampa. Where are you?
I'm trying to decide which automatic trans to use when I swap in the 318. My Jeep has the NP231 transfer case, supposedly with a 21 spline input.

Run a TF998/999. (904 series)

The inputs on the 231 are easy enough to swap, and 231s are very easy to find.

OK, but do they have to be from a 4x4 truck?
What about using a smallblock 727 from 4x4 Dodge? I thought it was a good idea to use one of those, since they are much shorter than a standard passenger car automatic.

with a 318 in that light of a vehicle I would go 904/999 all the way

I agree, but my only concern is the length of the transmission, and the ability to mate up to the NP231 t-case. I don't want the engine to have to be pushed to far forward in the engine compartment because of a long transmission. That's why I was thinking a 727 from a 4x4 dodge pickup would be the ticket. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong about it. This is my first 4x4 project, and I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. When I pull the tub off, I'll be able to start taking measurements.
Anyone know the overall length of a 904 or 999 case?
What vehicles did the 999 trans come in?

just build it with a 4x4 output shaft and tail housing and it will be shorter than a 4x4 727.

should be able to get them used from any of the Trans parts suppliers Dacco,Transtar,WIT,maybe even John at CRT.

When I had the 999 built for my Scrambler, I used the internal parts and output shaft and tail housing from my Jeep 998, and the Case and front section from a small block 904 series trans. The resulting transmission was much shorter than a 4wd truck based 727. I then mounted my trans and transfer case in the stock location, with several inches of clearance between my fan and the radiator, which needed a longer, semi custom shroud to span the gap.

Your setup with a YJ will be similar, as the 904 based trans is the automatic used in them. You will need a radiator with different inlet and outlet; one for a SBC conversion works well.
