Sounds to me like those fans are pulling a lot of amperage and the alternator is dragging the idle speed down. What amperage alternator are you running and what battery? One battery or two?

Your just loading down the alt enough to pull the
engine rpm down... must be some pretty heavy amps
on those fans... how many amps do they draw

im not sure, they are spal fans i seem to recall that they are 30 amps each.this is a 496 rb with 10.8 comp and a roller cam.dont you think it could handle an alt draw.i never thought about the amp draw and the alt being the culprit but so far thats all that seems to make sense.now what to do?

Just to test unplug 1 of the fans and see if it
drops 1/2 as much... then switch the fans and see
if it does the same... you might have 1 pulling a
high draw

good idea, ill do that tomorrow and let ya know.im went to the spal web site and if i looked at the right fans they pull 20 amps each.

40 amps should drag it down a little, sounds like you have a bad fan or maybe a poor ground causing it to draw more amps then necessary.

well, i did that and they each pull it down half as much,i ran the grounds straight to the frame,no diff.i wonder if having to small a carb could cause this ,mabey im gettin too weak of an idle.also if the batt is weak could it be taxing the alt enough to bog it.

Charge up the battery and see... it could if the
battery is low and the alt is trying to put out a
lot of amps that it could load the engine enough
to pull the idle down... could be a bad battery that
just wont go to full charge

that could be it,this battery only rests at a little over 12 vlts till the car starts.but the car starts so easy you wouldnt notice without checking.

Try charging the battery with a battery charger that you can set at or below 6 amps(disconnet both battery leads first so there is no chance for any voltage drain) , charge it for two or three days and then let it sit for several hours and check the voltage. If it is above 12.25 to 12.50 the battery is okay, if it is above 12.5 up to 13.25 then the battery is probally in pretty good shape I have two big RV/marine batterys in my car and it does not get driven a lot, the flaot voltage will stay at 12.7 or above if I turn the battery switch off when I let the car sit I have a digtal radio with memory so it draws a tiny bit of current for it It will eventually draw the batterys down to 12.3 or so BTW, as far as the relays I would use two seperate 30 amp relays, one for each fan Hook them up parelel, not is series Run two seperate battery feed wires also.
