Hello,

I will have a 20' x 25' stall in my new garage that will double as a paint booth. I prefer to have positive pressure venting with a blower on an interior wall blowing in and a vent on the outside wall for exhaust.

Would 1500-2000 cfm would be adequate?

Has anyone bought a blower for this purpose that you are happy with? Where did you get it? How about a shutter type vent for exhaust? I am hoping for something better than the Menards/Home Depot stuff.

Also, what height would be optimal for the fan and exhaust? I would think the fan should be high and the exhaust should be low. They will have to go on the side walls, not the end walls. How far from the end walls should they be?

Thanks!

I use a harbor freight 2Hp dust collector plumbed into my ceiling with black ABS pipe. The exhaust is plumbed into the eve of the house up high to minimize upsetting the neighbors with the fumes and paint particles. I prefer to suck the fumes out so I have some control of where the incoming air / draft is coming from and going to. My garage is about the same size as your booth and it works just fine.

I paint quite a bit with a box fan 20 inch bolted in the side door opening and the door opening carborded up to the fan . i just suck out the over spray and use a hvlp guns and it works fine .
i have a friend who does paint less dent work all over the area and he says my work is just as good if not beter than all the big paint and body shops do with million dollar booths .
Its all in the prep , i also like to wipe the paint work off with anti static , and auto body tack rags (low tac) before base and after base & before clear .
This seams to help with dust .

Please don't take this wrong ! Your methods are low tech, but they work. I know because I use the same setup!

Thanks for the replies, after doing a lot of research, I may be leaning towards doing a negative pressure booth. It seems the big issue is the size of the inlet. A small inlet with a lot of air moving through it, ie a fan, will cause a lot of turbulence in the booth. I think using the fan at the exhaust opening and 2-4 large furnace filters for the intake will work much better.

Now I need to figure out some way to insulate the exhaust vent when not in use so the Minnesota winter air doesn't get in.

No windows you can use? Garage door: position a sheet of plywood between floor & door lower edge; cut some openings & mount some home heater filters for the exhaust.
