Looking to rebuild the 383 for my ’71 SSP. I want this car to be a daily driver with A/C so pump gas, good vacuum and decent fuel mileage is a must (I know not to expect much on fuel mileage but I would like to get 15+ mph if possible). In fact, I don’t want too much horsepower (is that possible?) because if I have it I will want to use it!!! Heads will be stock 906's.

Thinking of a stock-ish engine build but was hoping to take advantage of newer technology. What do you suggest for a decent build (pistons, cam, carb & manifold)?

I guess you'll want a nice light weight piston...so That's be a diamond or Wisco. (not cheap) Then it's all on your machine work. for cam a new custom grind would be best but off the shelf the MP 528 solid is a really good cam for a stockish motor. I think you need to decide how much motor you want and how many MPGs you want. I'd think a good tune on a stockish 383 could net 18-20mpg hwy.

A 528 solid cam is not going to be very street friendly in a pump gas 383. It surely won't get decent mileage.
Talk to the cam grinders. They can come up with a better and more modern grind than that old MP stick.

I have to say that I am confused. I never would have thought a solid cam with that much lift and duration would work well at all for my needs. I have a 284/484 cam in my 440 and it has no vacuum and a very choppy idle and poor fuel mileage. I guess I just don't understand cams well enough...

I was thinking something a little less money on the pistons as well.

Any others have cam/piston suggestions?

A new grind that is close to HP specs should work great. 15+ MPG won't be hard at all. Pistons are an issue. Seems like most are a compromise. Might be worth it in the long term to spend a few hundred extra and get a custom set. If you don't get the CR right, it will be harder on fuel and low on power. By the time you do some milling to make everything work w/ shelf pistons, wouldn't be that much more.

I want my fair share

If your running HP manifolds you might run the Comps 275DEH like i'm using 235/482 it pulls 12" of vacuum at idle with power brakes. Use the KB400 pistons, mill the heads .030 to get you around 84cc. Maybe a 670 street avenger carb (i'm using a 3310 750), you should be pretty happy and still get decent mileage if you keep your foot out of it . I'm running 3.91's now, you might want to use 3.55's or less for mileage.

Fuel economy = short duration, low lift cam and small carburetor. I have a Crower 267/271 cam in my 383 which is close to the stock 4 bbl cam which is good for performance but not for economy. Look at their Baja Beast or maybe the Mileage Compu-pro cam. 250ish duration (200 at .050),.420ish lift and 112 centerline. I would go with a 500 cfm 4bbl for the ultimate in mileage. When gas wasn't garbage, a friend of mine could get 20 mpg highway out of a 440 with that combination.

Sounds like you want something similar to a 68-70 RR engine. I don't have a recommendation on pistons. I just don't know what is out there for 383s. I would say whatever it takes to get to the 9:1 range. A cam in the 210 to 220 range at .050. I bet you would really like a 262xe Comp. I have a 268xe in a 400 and it works pretty well but i am using the 175k MP converter. If you are using a factory low stall i think the 262 would be a better choice. It's fairly similar to a stock RR cam but with a tighter lobe center and a hair more lift. Stock intake or DP4B. Perf RPM if you have the room. I like Holleys so i would use a 3310 750vs or something similar. I actually like the 4777 650 dp on engines that size but i am sure some will tell you that's a no-no for your project. A thermoquad would probably be great if you can find a good one. A bowl blend on the heads would be nice, recurved distributor, 1 3/4 headers.Could probably end up with a car that drove like a stock RR but is a good 1/2 second or more faster and and a couple MPG better too.

If fuel economy is more important than performance, this sounds like very good advice. Probably have very nice low end response too.

284/484 cam is awful for anything but racing. The 528 solid is way more mild. Solid doesn't = Race. I'd think a well tuned 383 w/ a 528 solid with Mani's or headers and 3.23's would get at least 16 probaly more... That said If mpg's is what you are after I'd call a cam guy and have a cam made for your application

383 piston choice is limited/sucks if you are going to use an open chamber head. You don't have to worry about running pump gas because the current crop of available pistons will keep you around 8.5 compression without block and head decking .

A true 9.00-1 with some keith black(or cast for that matter)pistons would work well with a short duration cam like a xe256/262 or similar grind.
small diameter long tube headers, dual plane intake with a t-quad or spread bore holley 650 vac secondary(or a well tuned 600 eddie),and a well curved distributor with vacuum advance.

Any improvements to the head flow will return better efficiency for mpg and performance.

A tight low stall converter (maybe a towing vert?)and some 2.76 gears will net you a nice highway mpg.
