Been thinking lately about cheap and easy ways to lighten and clean up my car so was looking at the engine bay and the inner fenders. If I weld up something for shock support will removing them help or hurt the aero affect any. What about structure/strength? Thankxxxx.........

On a unibody car, every panel helps support the whole. But if the car was caged, with forward tubes that will tie into the A-pillars, shock mounts, & rails, you've accomplished most of that. For twist I think tying R/F & L/F together (mimic the rad supt) makes sense.
Aero-wise, the air that gets through the grille & radiator and under the nose and into the wheelwells all creates drag; significant on a road-course car, critical on a top speed (Bonneville) car.

If you dont have bars going from the firewall out
to the front dont do it... they do add strength

I'd leave them in. You're going to add more weight back in trying to reinforce the shock towers. The inner fenderwells don't weigh that much anyway.

No I don`t have foreward bars and have no intention of cageing it at this point...................so much for that.

I added more weight in adding the bars than what I took out. But it made all sorts of room for my turbo setup. Hindsight I would only remove what was needed for clearance or work around them.

Look at other ways to do it and make the car as "aero" as possible. My 73 Dart Sport grill was open all the way across. I blocked off a good portion of that and only left the immediate radiator area open. Also redid the stock bumper brackets out of aluminum and switched to a fiberglass bumper and moved it in and as close to the body as possible.

Outcast Dodge guy.

Just a roll bar and have no plan at this point of installing a full cage so, I`ll pass on this idea for a while.

Every rock or piece of dirt ends up in your Engine compartment. You lose strength. Together they don't weigh 20 lbs. The reinforcement tubes would equal the weight. I say moly steering shaft, strut rods, aluminum bumper brackets and radiator. remove unnecessary brackets and bolts, trim K-Frame.

It only took a few passes to bend the front frame rails at the torsion bar cross member and pinch the doors at the top hinge when I tried that many years ago.

Thankxx again guys..........I`ll look elsewhere or just leave it alone. Now that I took a break from drinking, I have tons of energy and have re-wired about 1/2 of the car and installed more relays to make things more powerful and brighter.

I was actually thinking about doing that but decided to pass and let the beautiful music of 470 cubes of 12.1 compression solid roller cammed big block sing away.
