Why do the OEMs use special connectors and overly complicated mechanisms for seemingly simple items?
seems to me, it's their way to make more money by forcing you to go spend more by going back to the dealer, or buying officially licensed products
Radio anntenna's seem to be one I've come across lately. my 98 Dakota has the old school "standard" plug for the antenna wire, that plugs into ANY aftermarket radio.
my wife had a newer nissan that required a special adapter to make it work. my 04 Dakota had another special plug for the antenna wire.
WHY!?
money.

How about the radios themselves. My wife wants me to upgrade her RX-8 factory radio, NOT!!!
there are products out there (Alpine makes a nice one) that will allow you to integrate all sorts of nice speakers and amps into factory head units
Not an acceptable alternative. She wants one with with NAV and B/U camera. The stock sound system is good. In other words, wants new head unit. Ain't a head unit in the world that will fit in that pod. Looked for RX-8 used factory NAV units. Oyeeee $$$$
