I am seeing a fairly significant range of prices. Looking for a sending unit for the Dart, 1/2" pickup.

Thanks.

I see there is an offering with a 1/4" return, but only offered in 3/8". The 1/4" return would be nice as I need a 1/4" return from the pressure regulator to help fight off vapor lock.

How do you guys typically handle this? Drill the sending unit or return into the fill tube somehow? The latter seems like it might not be a great idea... hmm.

Also, 1/2" may be overkill. I would guess 3/8" could supply lots of HP.

The factory used 5/16" up to low po 440's and 3/8" for high po 440's and Hemi's so 3/8" will run a lot of power. It does depend somewhat on setup - for example mechanical or electrical pump.

I've gotten sending units from Mancini - 3/8" with 1/4" return. Just about all of them need the sender tweaked to get a somewhat accurate fuel guage reading.

Has the quality improved at all?
I have read many times that people had exactly the same problems that I have....FULL tank, guage reads 5/8 to 3/4. Half tank, guage reads 1/4. 1/4 tank of fuel, guage rests on the E line. This is terrible.

Wow, after market piece with quality issues, there is a surprise.... not what I wanted to hear.

Anyone have any luck modifying the stock unit, removing the line, and replacing with larger?

bought mine from 521 resterations. Called and asked about calibration told me they were all checked to be accurate. Well same problem reads 3/4 when full, reads 1/2 with just 5 gals gone. Is there a fix for this?

what's the build? 5/16 line is fine for most applications. I've seen cars run way into the 11's w/ 5/16 line and mechanical pumps.

If this continues to get worse I would suspect a sinking float.
I also got mine from 521 Restorations. When I got mine I checked it myself. It was within factory spec. When finished I put in 2 1/2 Gals. of gas and drove to the station where I added 5 more. Read just under half full. Time to check up the line. A common problem is resistance or shorts in the connectors and wiring. Be sure the ground strap is properly connected to CLEAN metal. Check continuity from the sending unit wire to the back of the gauge. Also check for resistance to ground with the sender and gauge wires unhooked. A high resistance short here would make the gauge read high.The gauge cluster voltage regulator is usually either good or bad.

I bought one from Dixie Restoration parts in Acworth, GA It reads perfectly. I understand they are getting theirs from the orginal supplier.

A very stock 383 for now to get the car back on the road, but have the majority of the parts for a 496" low deck stroker in the range of 600-650 hp. I have 1/2" aluminum fuel line that I am going to run along with 1/4" aluminum for the return. Mechanical RacePumps pump with their regulator which has an idle bleed return.

Okay sending unit reads 10.6 on the full which makes my gauage go to the full mark. Sender reads 80 on against the empty stop gauge reads empty. Great Now is where it gets intresting with sending unit reading 47.5 it just moves gauge off empty mark with 5 gals in tank, add 5 gals at 34.8 ohms gauge now reads 1/4 tank, add 6 gals total of 16gals get reading of 19.4 ohms gauge reads between 1/2 and 3/4. I don't think I can get 3 more gallons in tank so I'm saying its close to full because gas is up into fill tube. So first is even if I could get 3 more gallons in it that shouldn't take gauge from between 1/2 and 3/4 to full or take ohm reading from 19.4 to 10.6. Honstly I think its phased wrong or its wrong unit for Plymouth 19 gallon tank. All I do know is the old sending unit which came from Mancini was right on the money. Which makes me think this unit is just phased wrong. What are your thoughts?

The issue with a fuel gauge is that they are not linear. What needs to be accurate is when it is full (at least close), but more importantly when they are empty. I think between these points anything is "fair game".

Been alot of (reported) probs whenever the issue comes up. I just got a new spectra tank from Frankie Mitchell on eGay (cheap/fast esp considering his rep from decades ago) & I'm gonna weld a bung on the front vertical side at the bottom & feed it from that plus another bung for a drain plug & just find a good stock 5/16" sender for the gauge. They do peg past F when the rheostat gets submerged when you fill up past a certain point and I'm not so concerned w "F" accuracy but close to E I want it dead on but w a good stock unit it's a moot point

The basic process for adding a larger pickup is to remove the old and drill out the hole a little undersize for the new tube. Then use a drift to enlarge the hole so it makes a small flange or raised area to grip the new tube tightly. Then solder in with a high power iron or torch. I've never done it... and don't plan to try but that is the basic approach.

I agree need to know when empty. Full is a mute point. My problem when gauge reads empty I have at least 7 to 8 gals left.

Hmm, maybe I'll weld a sump to my brand new tank and use the 5/16" as the return off the original sending unit. At least I know the thing works, at least it did 9 years ago when I pulled the car apart.

Two points :

If you would read the FSM, you could bench test any sending unit ; set leads to your multimeter as advised, and operate the arm.

Secondly, the ground strap is a weak point. Build your own ground with alligator clips ; clamp and test.

My guess is that you have lousy ground (happened to me !).

did it, hooked up good ground with aligator clips no diffrence. Been experimenting all day. okay with no fuel in tank reading is 77.4 ohms gauge rest below empty. with 2.5 gallons reading is 49.7 gauge sets on empty.add 5 gallons reading is 37.4 gauge reads between 1/4 and empty. Its like the readings are changing each time I try it. Has any one tried to bend arm to get an empty reading on gauge with diffrent ohm reading and see what happens?

You've verified a good ground & I was thinking maybe a person could add a resistor in series to up the resistance to reduce voltge to shift the needle back to dead on E when the float is at the bottom of it's travel BUT w it's showing a diff reading each time I'd eyeball the windings & see what's changing/shorting as something is or there is a poor connection somewhere that is changing the ohms but you are physically moving the float/arm between tests so I'd zero in on the windings & check that the arm that slides on the windings has enough tension down on the windings or anything else that dont look kosher.
