I have a couple of rub thrus on my steel dash frame, do I need to prime those areas before I rattlecan SEM black paint. It's on a 71 Abody. Also, what's the closest OEM black color? Thanks

Still looking for LM29H1B415501, '71 Demon 340

It is better if you sprayed some SEM etching primer on the bare metal spots, then paint over the etching primer with your black paint-make sure you paint it with in the window period for the SEM etching primer. If you wish you can also just use some spray can sandable primer on it, because it is inside you car and sand smooth when dry and then paint.
As far as the correct black, I would use a satin black, or a low gloss...They also make a Bumper black that is close also.

Now that you have it all primed, I'd touch up the bare spots with reg primer, forget etch primer. Then I would red scuff pad the whole thing and paint it.
I would have painted it bare steel, myself.

If your looking for a rattle can, this would be my suggestion.

The correct paint is this 9388 black paint. It has a very unquie finish, not not gloss, not flat. The Sem paint above is very close, imo.

I've sprayed it(lacquer) right over the factory metal dash frame that I just scuffed and sprayed and they have been in my cars for 5 and 12 years now.
So sure about the primer thing, because your dash frame is inside the car not out in the weather.

Agree a primer first would help... it will be more uniform after the topcoat. Rustoleum auto primer is available in black. Easy to work with and seems to hold up well.
