I've had my BFG's stored in my garage for a few years now. Stacked up in the corner, on the rims. I don't see any visible signs of them being bad. But I'm a little concerned they'll be OK on the open road after all this time. I have them on the car now sitting in the garage. Look OK, still no visible signs of anything bad. Any tire guys thoughts? Should I even have a concern?
Thanks.

Whats a few years? 3 or 6, they will harden up. My buddy had 15yo tires that looked new, they separated at hwy speed and took out his quarter panel

I have been running a set on my 70 RR since 1995. I have only put about 6K miles on them in that time. They still seem to function fine and no signs of deterioration or cracking.

How old were those tires before he started running them? With as few miles that we all put on our cars, they don't wear out. I know tires age, especially in UV light from the sun, but how many of us go buy brand new tires every 3 years even though the treads aren't worn out yet?

My dads van has been back on the road since '02, that's almost 10 years now, and he's only put about 5,000 miles on it since then. His tires are fine and show no signs of deterioration or dry rot. If he bought new tires every 3 years, he'd be on his 3rd set by now, that's $1,000 in tires that he hasn't spent... That's a lot of money!

I have a set of BF Goodrich T/As that I've run on my Dakota, maybe 10k miles total over the last 5 years, and they still look good too--they spend most of the time inside on a shelf, or in the garage if I have them mounted on the truck
How often does everybody else on here change their tires, due to age, not tread wear?

they were on his car for the 15 years, maybe 10K on them, no outward signs of trouble. they probably got weak at the cords and let loose. i personally would not run tire that are more than 10yo, even if they look new, maybe on a trailer queen or a car that puts around but not on one that's going to be driven over 40mph for any length of time, I mean whats a set of tires for our cars $400 or so? better than ripping out a quarter panel and wheel well

My understanding is that tires that are 'mounted' and aired up will not deteriorate at the same rate as 'unmounted' tires. That is why tires on the 'shelf' so to speak need to be sold and mounted within 2 years. Our costco won't even sell you a tire that is older than 2 years according to the code on the tire. My daily driver is a 2000 chev, still have the original tires on it, only 80k mileage though . . .
If your tires are mounted, and your car is stored inside a garage, I wouldn't worry too much about detoriation. Maybe take some of the weight off them (jackstands) in the off season to reduce flat spotting them.

Mine on my Charger are about 10+ yrs old..maybe 3-4000 miles and are harder than wedding tackle. Am trying to work up the strength to buy new ones as I don't trust them very much at highway speed or def. on the track. (I can boil them all day long and never leave a black mark!!!)

I used to laugh at old tire stories but have had 3 BFG 10.50 x 15 All-Terrains come apart on me at 70 on blacktop. This not only screwed up three different trips but also banged up both front fenders on the 64Dog. I also had an "old but looked good" tire shed its tread on the Interstate at 70. I am now considerably more leery about tread separation and throwing belts. I guess I think that if you use them every so often they will be more apt to last than if they are just sitting for years. But I really don't know. I had a brand new 12.50 x 15 on a 15 x 10 rim that sat for 10+ years off the ground as a spare tire. Tire looked absolutely brand new. I was going to use the vehicle again so aired up the tires to 35 psi. Three days later I looked at the spare and it had blown up. There was a split across the top of the tire and the belt end was protruding through the split. This on a tire that had never been on the ground.

Wow... i guess i'm just way more ov a gambler than the rest ov you guys. And i'm guessing you guys selling or trading in these perfectly good but old tires are the reason i can still find cheap used tires on the used racks. I've been racing and ripping around on these 'reject' tires for 20 years now... heh... my very first car had 10 year old bias plys on it. Maybe i'm lucky, but i've never had a tire issue. The older tires certainly grab less aggressively than brand new rubber, but i cant afford new. Never could.

I had a friend who thought like this too, used to think i was nuts for buying used tires. He'd rather have brand new Radial TA's than some 5 year old Z-rated summer tires... which to me is just silly.

But... i understand the reasoning here... i'd buy new if i had the means. The rollers on my Challenger have been sitting under the sun (on the car) for 11 years now. They were used when i put 'em on (pretty much just to look cool parked), and have decent tread left... but i'm guessing 15 years ov sunlight might be pushing it. Hopefully i can find some newer stuff before it hits the road. Tires are not in the budget.

Good stories all.
But these tires never seen sunlight, stacked up in the corner of my garage. Just time, and dust sitting, inflated on rims.

I wonder if this post might be the case that a nitrogen fill makes sense?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

I'd use 'em and not give 'em a second thought. I had a set of BFG Radial T/As on the RR for over 15 years (10 of which were parked outside in CA). Finally, one of 'em developed some sort of defect inside that caused a nasty vibration at around 65 mph. Never blew, but it was clear after dismounting and replacing the tires that one of them was NG.
