ive been rebuilding the entire front suspension on my 61 newport.no manuals that old for torque specs.tie rods seem to be the same (40) in all my manuals,so i would assume this would be correct.on line the only thing ive found on ball joints is @ (120).problem here is if i torque to that, the castle nut is run too deep up the stud, and the cotter has no way of locking around the castle nut.what am i missing here? need some suspension help here.does anyone have in there archive some specs to help me out?any or all would be a big help.

A balljoint is tightened in a taper. It should be only a little bit from snug to real tight, and the castle slots should be the right height.
MAybe you are missing a washer, but I'd look very carefully at the parts and application.

My torque spec is 'tight.' If you can tighten it until the whole nut is all the way past the hole for the cotter pin, there's another problem besides the torque spec--like the nut is too short or the stud is too long.

washer needs to go on the boot side of spindle, not the castle nut side.which would limit the amount of depth.the light just came one.

Never seen a washer installed on boot side of knuckle. I would not do that. It goes directly under castle nut.

putting the washer between the boot and the knuckle doesn't let the taper of the ball joint stud seat in the way. put the correct thickness washer under the castle nut so the hole in the stud lines up correctly.
