Using the diagram:

1. The upper radiator hose (ITEM "A"): Is the flow
a. from radiator to block or
b. From block to radiator

From there I can conclude the lower radiator hose (ITEM "B") flow direction

2. The heater hose going from the water pump
housing to the firewall(ITEM "D"): Is the flow
a. from the water pump housing to the firewall or
b. from the firewall to the water pump housing.

Again, I can conclude the other heater hose (ITEM "C") direction also.

This is not an exam.
It is because I am stupid and never can remember which is which.
Thanks.

the upper hose is out of the block and into the radiator.

on the heater hoses...I don't remember, but I'd bet that it was from water pump to the firewall...where does the other hose go again? whichever hose is closer to the upper radiator hose is probably the "out" flow to the heater core.

but then again, I would also think that the hose with the valve in it was the heater core supply side, but I suppose it doesn't really matter where the valve is on a closed loop system

unplug one heater hose and see which way the water is going with the engine idling and the hose end into a bucket.

You realize that lower radiator hose is not factory correct, right?

(Oh wait - I thought this post was in the WIW forum).

I'm not a betting man. I'll wait for the definitive answer on the heater hoses.

Thank about the radiator hoses, though.

With all that bacon on your radiator I don't see how the engine won't over heat.

Hey! No fair changing the picture mid-thread!

C should be the supply
D should be the return
Upper holes in waterpump housing supply the heads
Lower holes in waterpump housing collect water from the block

Passenger side inlet from lower hose is common on C barges and is used in BB swaps when using an A engine radiator.

"C should be the supply
D should be the return"

Meaning the coolant flows FROM the engine at "C" to the heater core and returns to the engine at "D"?
Have Igot that right?

The reasoning behind my question is trying to figure out the best way to do an absolute thorough flush of the engine, heater core, and radiator.

It looks to me then that by disconnecting the upper radiator hose at the radiator AND running water from a garden hose into the radiator cap, while the engine and heater is running of course, I'll be flushing the whole system. Yes?

I've been running a cooling system cleaner for a few days now and it's time to get all that crud out now.

why not use a flush tee in the heater hose and back flush it with the top rad hose off the rad

i do mine this way every yr when changing the anti-freeze.

Correct. If you don't remove the thermostat then the best way to flush the system is to back flush by connecting the hose to the "C" fitting and remove the bottom hose (engine off). You can flush the radiator separately. Unless you pull the drain plugs in the block (which is nearly impossible if they are in there forever), you will never get all the crud out.

Upper holes in WP housing are the hot return from the block/heads thru a short 90 deg turn down from the head(s) at the front end(s) of the block. Bottom pair for cooled coolant pumped into the block

I'm writing this down this time so I don't have to ask again next year for the umpteenth time.

Thanks.
