How much of a pain is it to do a water pump on a '04 sebring with a 2.4? I don't see a whole lot of info just checking it out on google.

It seems you have to pretty much remove everything on the side of the engine as it's buried inside the timing cover? I see people mention pulling crankshaft and cam sprockets, is it really that involved?

yes.

It is driven off the timing belt so you have to pull it off and you might as well replace it while your in there. Even to get it off without replaceing the belt you need to pull the crank damper, you need a 3 jaw puller. You have to pull the damper to pull the cover to get at the stuff in there. All data calls for 3.8 hours, the first time I did one it took me twice that long, now after doing a few I think I can get that time.

Autozone has the correct puller for the crankshaft pulley on their loaner tool program. A regular 3 jaw puller will not work unless you have the insert tool.

Also be sure and pay attention to which way you put the cam sprockets back on. They are marked 2.0 on one side and 2.4 on the other. Same head as 2.0DOHC just different cams, and the timing marks are different due to that.

Why would you remove the cam sprockets when you're just doing the water pump and timing belt???

Helps to gain access from up top to work. The Stratus is more of a PETA to work on than a Neon. There is very little room next to the strut tower.

Yes, There's very a little room between the engine and fender. I can see this being a busted knuckle swear fest.

Do I need a manual to do the timing procedure? or are there clear marks on the sprockets and block where everything should line up?

is it possible to just remove the crank pulley and kind of bend the timing cover out of the way to get to the water pump without messing with the cam sprockets? Or is it better to just remove everything?

Unfortunately not, you will need the whole cover off to re line up the cams. If you can get the cam holding tool, it makes it a bunch easier to reinstall the belt. Also make sure to look up the proper timing belt mark location. It has a hydraulic tensioner and i believe you have to have the crank a half tooth advanced to take up for movement of when you set belt tension. Make sure you rotate the engine over at least 2 revolutions by hand and check your marks again. Saves you having to pull it back apart for an erratic idle (dont ask how I know)

Whenever I have a good running engine I am about to do a t-belt on I always mark the belt and pullys where they are, then I take them off and transfer the old belt marks onto the new belt, then install the new belt and line up the marks on the new belt with the marks on the cam and it is done, fool proof if you are carefull.

Well it turns out what I assumed was the water pump going out was actually the bearing in the compressor clutch. The pulley is just flopping around on the shaft.
