with a 318 in that light of a vehicle I would go 904/999 all the way

I agree, but my only concern is the length of the transmission, and the ability to mate up to the NP231 t-case. I don't want the engine to have to be pushed to far forward in the engine compartment because of a long transmission. That's why I was thinking a 727 from a 4x4 dodge pickup would be the ticket. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong about it. This is my first 4x4 project, and I have a steep learning curve ahead of me. When I pull the tub off, I'll be able to start taking measurements.
Anyone know the overall length of a 904 or 999 case?
What vehicles did the 999 trans come in?

just build it with a 4x4 output shaft and tail housing and it will be shorter than a 4x4 727.

Thanks. Do you know who sells those kinds of parts?
