Who is using VoIP?

Who are you using and what is the quality and price you are paying? Thinking of doing it to lower costs.

My parents have had magic jack for 2 yrs now. No issues so far and way cheaper than landline from the phone co if you already have a high speed internet connection.

I do have a high speed internet connection, my son had Magic Jack about 6 years ago and when he called me the quality and latency was not good at all. I am asking this to find out if the quality has improved or not with these services and which one might be better than another.

Magic Jack

I agree, at first there were issues in some areas. Some phone numbers would not dial and some calls were dropped in a short time.

I have had it since 2010 and it works fine. Do the version where it hooks directly to the LAN, and not interface with the computer.

I have 2 voip lines.
one through work and one through att uverse.
thinking of going to ooma next.

the uverse doesn't seem to save much if anything cost wise.
but no real quality issues.
but it really does depend on bandwidth and what you are doing.
I know the work one is very bad. if I am doing screen sharing, or some web conf type stuff, I have had it drop out entirely. can't hear anyone.

Superb audio quality, no latency issues..

Just my $0.05...

When Charter Communications raised our phone over internet from $5.00 a month to $40.00 a month, we fired them (and their TV service) and went with Magic Jack. We've been happy with it. The phone service thru the cable company was the same thing, but I will give them this- Charter ran at about 98% reliability, Magic Jack is at about 95%. A SLIGHT reduction in reliability is worth the significant cost savings!

You NEED an internet carrier with Magic Jack. Don't think because they say you don't need a computer to run it you don't also need internet.

I use Ooma- less than $4/month (taxes only), just have to buy the box (about $150). It's been great for me.

We use Magic Jack and it works fine for our home and our home/office business line. We cut our land line cost, which ran over $400/month with the business calls to $60 +/- annual. Call quality is equal to what we had with the land line. Yes, you do need an internet connection, but obviously you already have one. The only down-side we have seen is when the power goes out so does the internet. So, we use battery back-up to send an email alert to our most active customers and a few family members, then shut things down till the power is back up - Doesn't happen often, but when it does we got it covered.

I have a whole house generator so loss of power is not an issue.

We have comcast voice with our internet/tv bundle. It's hardly used since we only got it since the triple play was cheaper than what we were playing for the other two alone. Seems fine. We also have magic jack plus, seems to work fine. I keep that active for the $30 a year and can use it on wifi on my cell with the app. We keep one active to call Canada since I work across the border most of the time.
