Landmaster from Damnation Alley

I was just reading up on the Landmaster vehicle from the movie Damnation Alley and according to the Wikipedia link about it, it was recently moved to Central California. Here are the pics from that link.

I've always liked the vehicle, the movie wasn't the greatest but overall ok.

If I ever have the time, I'd love to build a model of this.

Do any members have pictures of the Landmaster when it was parked at the late Dean Jeffries' shop in California? He designed and built it after being approached by the producers.

Mike.

I saw the movie and thought it was 'ok'. I also really like the vehicle. I thought it'd be cool to drive it out in the desert.

I think that movie played for the entire summer at the drive in as the 1st of a double feature. I think I saw it about 6 times.

That used to be parked at Dean Jefferies shop on Cahuenga Blvd for ages. You could see it from the Hollywood Freeway too if you knew where to look.

He passed away last year and the shop has cleared out and been for sale.

Sorry no pics of it out front. It was there for years. But FWIW, I do have these....

My bother was touring some friends from Boston around a few years ago and they stopped by Jefferies and Barris's shops. And turned out both icons were there and let them tour their shops!

Steve,

Thanks for sharing your pictures. Your brother and friends must have had a blast seeing both shops.

That's cool. I've seen the movie a few times. Always kinda wondered where it came from and where it went.

that "thing" was also the "paperboy-2000" from the short lived tv series "get a life", starring chris elliot.

I've always admired and enjoyed the works of author Roger Zelazny, who wrote the excellent novel Damnation Alley. Unfortunately, the movie bore almost no similarity to the novel. Matter of fact, just about the only element of the book they got right was the special purpose-built armored car. And man did they ever get that right. The rest of the movie is pretty horrible from a story and acting perspective.

20th Century Fox poured money into it as one of two science fiction films they were bankrolling. Damnation Alley was supposed to be the 1977 sci-fi blockbuster, while the other was considered a risky venture from an unproven production team, so it received far less support. The other film ended up being Star Wars, which of course was huge. Damnation Alley, with it's scenes of rubber bugs "eating" people died at the box office.

The Landmaster is just about the only good thing that came from it. Any idea who owns it now?

In the movie it's played out as there were two at the start, then one gets destroyed in a storm and they continue on in the remaining one. In reality, only one was built.
