How many miles is a lot for a Cummins Diesel?
      #7045574 - Mon Jan 30 2012 10:31 PM

I've got 236K miles on my '04 Cummins Diesel. Truck runs awesome, Automatic trans has been flawless. Most of the miles are with a car trailer behind it. How many miles can I expect to get out of this rig before I need some major engine or trans work?

Others will doubt the following, but.........
I know of a guy with a '93 2500. He CLAIMS that it went over 600,000 miles before he pulled it apart for a rebuild. By that time it was only getting 10 mpg and used almost as much oil as fuel!
That truck is a disaster. Dents and scratches everywhere, ripped and greasy upholstery, cracked windshield.......

You should get another 2-400K out of it before R&R on the motor. I've read about a few 5.9 Cummins going past 1,000,000 mile make before overhaul. It's all how you drive and take care of them. Dave

I personally know of a 93 Cummins that was used as a hotshot hauler. It had over 750,000 without a rebuild. I've seen several common rail Cummins like your 04 with almost 400,000 and still going. My 04 started getting improved fuel mileage at 200,000 miles. It was finally getting broke in. I believe in keeping the filters and fluid changed. Drive sensible, diesels are not made for drag racing and I don't believe in turning them up with programmers etc. If it's blowing black smoke your wasting fuel and shortening the life of the truck, just my

I personally have pulled a 95 cummins 12 valver down with right at the 950000 mile mark, yes almost 1 million miles. The guy was a custom camper hauler from texas, and he had a spot in Wyoming where his friend lived, and he parked the rig there for a month at a time. He brought it inn to us for an altornator fauilure, and had some oil leaks. He basically said pull it out and put gaskets inn it. We did, and ill tell ya what, that thing was just fine. We did ring and bearing it, but it didnt need a bore job, just a nice hone, and rings. Cylinders werent too lumpy at all. Bearings looked awsome, the valves needed done pretty badly, but that was the worst thing. We took 10 off the head, and put a 10 over head gasket inn it, and ran it. Sadly the old fella traded it inn on a new at the time 05 4 door long box, after putting 250K on that truck, he had to retire due to his health.

That truck as far as I know is still arround down in Texas. Its white and grey IIRC long box extended cab. Truck had a 5 speed, and a gear venders in it.

Sweet set up. True testimate to the Cummins.

There are many documented 1 million miles 5.9 CTD's. At one point (probably has changed as outputs climbed) Cummins themselves claimed an "Average Life to Overhaul" of 440,000 miles for the 5.9 ISB.

....the 48RE is OK, but nothing special; expect it to last as well as most auto trannies behind a 600 ft lbs engine. If your engine is at stock output, and you drive sanely, they will last reasonably well....start boosting power or running it hard and it's time could be up any day.

I think any engines life is directly related to useage and maintenance. An engine that sees a lot of cold run time before the thermostat opens doesn't "self clean" it's oil of the acids and water, and usually doesn't last as many miles as an over the road truck that spends 99% of it's run time at 190*. Most engine wear is on the cold startup - an engine pretty much doesn't wear once it is up to operating temp - tossing in a regular maintenance schedule for oil/filter changes with premium materials will maximize any engines life. With (all) that said, there's no reason a Cummins shouldn't see 500K+ being used for what it was built for - driving/hauling down the road. One on soccer mom duty may wear out much faster.

We are Haulin Horse Power Transporters and while on a delivery, we ran into a fellow Cummins owner in a 2005 truck who also hauls cars for people, he told us that he had over 900,000 miles on his and only had one rebuild at about 500,000 miles. He told us that he had the tranny done 1 time the only problem he really had was brake pads. He told me that the only pads that will last are Mo-Par Pads, no other after market pads would last. He also told us that he does all of his own labor, he loved the truck. Ours is a 2004 truck with 140,000 miles, bought used and I love the truck. Good Luck - HEMI JOE

Mine is a 2001 SLT Quad cab with auto, and is approaching 250k on it now. I replaced the tranny at 180k, but went with a Dave Goerend setup with billet low stall converter. Mine was still working fine, but the fluid had lots of particulates in it during changes, and I didn't want to take a chance of getting stranded with it.

At ~220k I lost the injection pump. It was almost impossible to start, but ran fine once it lit off. Turned out the pump was still ok mechanically, the electronics on the pump failed.

Other than that I put some RV275 injectors, exhaust, and a smarty programmer, HX35 turbo (used) and blocked off the waste gate. Did most of that before 100k, to turn up the performance.

Couple of sets of shocks, and tires. Brakes wear out regularly though. I have two sets of lifetime warranty pads, and two sets of rotors and swap out as necessary. Now keep in mind with the low stall converter, once the tranny shifts up, it will idle at 20mph. Houston morning traffic moves at 10-15mph, so some days I am on and off the brakes for about 10 miles of my morning commute.

Told the wife I would get rid of it at 200k, then when that came and went, I promised 300k. She HATES the way it rides. Something about the John Deere riding smoother LOL....

Paint started peeling, so I had it painted last year. Looks good on the outside. The interior is falling apart though. Drivers seat is coming apart, and anything plastic on the dash is cracked, cracking, or broken. Fist size chunks are falling out of the dash board. Bought one of those carpet covers for it and didn't look back hehehehe.

Dave,

that's awesome. brought a smile to my face reading that!

if the insides are falling apart, go old school vanner on it, grab some household carpet scraps from home depot and put them on the floor, take some thin masonite and wrap it with fabric and stab it up as a head liner, then get seats from whatever, and bolt them to the floor. good to go for another half million miles!

by the way, if the wife thinks it rides rough, then look for an extra comfy "captains" chair that is more like a lazy boy than a vehicle seat, the seat will absorb what those heavy duty springs on an empty truck won't!

My 02 3500 dually has 189000 and rusn like new,the trans was never broken but upgraded at 35000 with a bullydog valve body and exhaust brake.Runs as good as it ever did,The front end ,had to replace all ball joints starting at 125 to 150ooo and brakes in the front are a routine item if you drive hard. I will just keep driving it till it dies. It will probably will outlast me.

I got 216k on my 01. It's a 5 speed, so far as I know, just a clutch replacement. Runs great and starts easy. It leaks a little oil, but nothing much. It appears to have had some paint work, it does need a little rust work on the ds doors and fenders got some bubbles. However the interior is near mint. So come spring, I'll fix the front door and replace the rear, already got one for it, touch up some spots and be good for another 200k

That makes me feel good about my 01 SLT Quad 5 speed. I bought it in 05 with 44000 on it. I only have 75,000 on it now. It's a short bed 2WD so I don't have to worry about a transfer case, etc...although I often wish it was 4WD! The clutch and brakes are original and seem fine. All I have ever done to it is change the oil and keep it clean. I did put in a SuperChip and run it on mild performance. The mileage improved by 1 or 2 miles a gallon after it turned about 60000. Does that mean it will get better and better with use? Gets about 22 on the highway and 13 pulling my 24'trailer. The steering is sloppy but I can live with it. I'll probably keep the truck forever since I now put less than 2000 miles per year on it. There may be plans for a tow up to Ontario and down to Florida in the next year or so.

I actually just got mine in October. Although I know the owner who had it since it was 2 years old. It did need front wheel bearings and the front end was rebuilt, tie rods/ball joints and such before I got... which is a common problem for the 4x4s. It had an aftermarket lift pump installed at some point too. I can't really say on the mpg's improving, but mine with an edge comp box, 33" tires and 3.54 gears gets about 18mpgs. The worse I ever got, due to a lot of short trips was 16.5

The key to making an 03 and up common rail Cummins lasting is the injectors. If 1 goes bad it can fry a piston in a heartbeat. This is especially true on late 04 and up 325 hp trucks. The earlier ones seem to be less trouble prone in my findings. I would be saving my pennies for some injectors if I were you. If you havent replaced any yet, you are probably on borrowed time. Make sure to get fuel from a place that keeps fresh CLEAN diesel. The old 12 valves will run on garbage fuel but the new ones will not. With that being said, A friend of mine ahas an 07 5.9 auto dually with 600k plus on it. Runs and drives as new with no problems with the engine other than the water pump. The auto trans made it 550k. The truck is bone stock and VERY well maintained tho.

Bought a 92 1 ton 4x4 last summer for 3 grand.Guy said the speedo broke at 260K and his guess was over 300K. Hooked a trailer to it towing another truck and hauled ass from Las Vegas to Pittsburgh only stopping for fuel and quick eats.Truck ran flawless, 16-18mpg,running 75-85 mph, didn't use any oil. Damn good truck for the money.

I have seen three 05 cummins blocks ruined due to an injector going out, ruining the piston and since the cam runs in the block, no bearings, it ran trash through and wiped the block out.
Gotta love that water in the fuel.
My 93 cummins has 550,000 on her, and it purrs like a kitten.

I met a guy who hauled cars for a living, and he had 475K on his 01 3500. It was turned up, so he had replaced the tranny, but the engine was fine. Considering that the Cummins High Mileage Club has grille badges up to 900K miles, I'm pretty sure they last a while. I have a 100K badge on my 98.5 (102K so far). On a related note, the application for a badge is mailed to Cummings, GA. That would be like a place called Camero that deals with Camaros.

I had a 92 that I paid $900 for. It had 315k on the odometer but sometimes the odometer didn't work and sometimes it would roll miles while sitting still lol so no telling what it really had. It was a great ugly old truck.

I love the old first gen trucks despite the low power output. That truck always started the same no matter the weather. I think you could probably hit the flywheel with a hammer and it would start lol. It never turned over it always started on the first compression stroke it came to.

My '04.5 just turned 35k miles. Mileage sucks so i don't drive it much, but i like the truck.

I'm the new CARETAKER of Weinstats '69 440 'cuda registry and have 104 of the 360 cars to date. 84 fastbacks/20 coupes. Always looking for new(REAL M-code) '69 440 'cudas to add to the registry so drop me a note if any are found or known. This isn't a publicly released registry. Thanks, Dave
