NEW TOY!!! 82 Dodge D350 Crew Cab!
      #6942886 - Tue Nov 29 2011 09:53 PM

Hey guys, got a new truck today! from a moparts member as well. I love my new truck, i plan on painting it intense blue. I was wondering a couple things.. 1. i want to use newer dodge 17's such as 2003+ 17" wheels, i know the truck has lug centric wheels, will i have a problem getting the newer 17's to balance? anyway, since i know this thread is worthless without pics, i added a couple. as you can see in the second pic, i removed the windshield visor, topper, side mirrors, etc.. opinions welcome!

Very cool. I'd buff that thing out and run it. The paint looks pretty good in black. Get rid of those side steps and bolt on some older style (Smaller) bumpers, for a sportier look, and hit the road. Good luck with it!!!

Did you buy that from the guy who just moved from Atlanta? I remember seeing one exactly like that on Craigslist. Good looking truck either way.

just wanted to swing this post back to the top so i won't have to search for it again lol. truck is in the paint booth and should get sprayed tomorrow. i am painting it electric blue and when i get it back next week i will redo the interior in custom gray. I bought a set of 2008 dodge ram 2500 wheels and tires. am i going to run into any issues trying to use these being hub centric versus lug centric or can i bolt them up tight and go? pics will be coming soon!

You better get the calipers out. Those newer wheels have a different offset to them.

I'm pretty sure the offset will cause the rears to Rub terribly. Hp383 owned my crew at one point and had 07 or so steelies on it and clearance wasn't thought of and they rubbed some of the lettering away only on a mile or less drive

Be glad it isnt a Dually with the big lug studs. I ordered a new set of rims for mine and they wouldnt work because the Duallys use a larger stud than the SRW trucks. Check with your local tire/wheel dealer.

If you are going to try to use the newer Dodge factory 17's you will need to purchase a good quality BILLET aluminum 1.5 to 2 inch spacer. I have used them, and know of at least one other guy who uses them on a Competition Pulling Diesel with no issues. This guy doesn't use his truck lightly, its a Comp puller, daily driver, and heavy tow hauler. No issues with the BILLET spacers.

You will run into rubbing issues on the inside of the box, and may have front clearance issues with the upper control arms. I know on the truck Harry is talking about I had upper arm clearance issues with the truck in a free hang position (no weight on the front suspension) but once the truck was back on the ground it was ok.

This is the company I bought mine from.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-5-Dodge-Dually...r#ht_3308wt_878

You will need to check your truck to see if it has the standard 1/2" studs, or the HD 5/8" studs.

Either way you will need to tell the company what stud size you currently have, and that you want the spacers to allow for the 9/16" stud required on the new Dodge trucks.

The cost may end up making the swap unfavorable, vs purchasing a new set of aftermarket wheels with the correct offset.

I only had to buy one pair to use on a 4x4 RC that I added 1 ton axles to. I needed them on the front only, since the rear D70 was from a 96 truck, it already had the 9/16" studs, and was wider than the stock 93 rear.

I have since replaced the stock 17's with aftermarket. But am holding on to pair of spacers, because I may convert the RC to a Dually setup

You are mostly correct here. However there are SWR crew cabs out there with the 3/4 or 1 ton designations that have the large 5/8" studs.

My 78 was a good example of that. I ordered new wheels for it, and them after mounting tires found out they wouldn't fit. (expensive lesson) so I ended up running a trailer wheel on the truck, it was the only way to get an aluminum wheel in the correct stud and offset size.

what a lot of great info. thank you very much for that! hopefully i get the truck back next week and i'll see what i need for adapters/spacers. i got the 2500 wheels with like new tires for $350, so i'd sure like to use them as long as it works without looking dumb or having clearance issues.

The stripe is 2" wide, and the black out on the lowers is done in Line-X. To help prevent rust, and chips.

Yes, but he was inquiring as to the truck in the picture, not the truck it is now. The new owner pulled the stripe off. And also converted it to 4x4 with a Cummins. As to the lower coming off, it was due to bad prep by the Line-X shop back in 2003. The Line-X is coming off, but the paint is still like new under it. And it holds dirt because the current owner never washes it.

And as for the Line-X Lifetime Nationwide Guarantee, its garbage. The shops in my local area said that they would not remove and respray because A) the Lifetime Warranty is only covers sprayed bedliners, no other part of the vehicle, bumper, etc. & B) I would have to return it to the shop in Nashville for warranty. So the receipt I had with the Lifetime Nationwide warranty which included none of their "exclusions" was worthless.

I probably could have fought it in court, but I didn't have the funds to do so. I wont use Line-X ever again, and now like to use Raptor Liner.

How about more info on the wheels, I have Crager Black Soft 8 on now. They can not get them true round, ordered 6, sent 4 back, got 4 different and sent 1 back and kept the other. Most of the new wheels just does not look right on an old dodge. I would love to find a set of the old Magnesium Sprint style in 8 lug that i would not loose an arm and leg for.

The biggest problem with the old slots is that they are mostly 16.5s. The 16.5 line of tires is dieing fast. My dually had 16s when I bought it and jumped on the Weld dually wheels as none of the new dually rims fit the 5/8ths stud...

I did find out that GM duallys used a 9/16 stud that shares the same knurled shank diameter and length as the 5/8ths Dodge stud.

When doing the swap, make sure you use everything out of the donor. The core support will need to be used, along with the newer grill. If you want to use the old grill, it will be more fabricating. The radiator and inter-cooler supports are completely different. When I did mine, I basically gutted the old truck from the front doors forward and inserted everything from the donor. I also used the brakes, HVAC, dash, and door hardware. The fuel lines, wire harness, and drive shaft will need to be lengthened. Also the diesel suspension needs switching. By the time I was done, the only thing 85' was the body and frame. Its not overly a complicated process, just time consuming. I pulled my trailer camping this weekend and I'm so happy to have a truck like mine. If you have and questions, feel free to PM me.

man your truck is sweet! that sure is labor intensive.. i didn't want to turn it into an all-summer diesel swap. but if i have to change hvac, brakes, suspension, fuel lines, tank, dash, wiring, get parts lengthened etc. it will take forever, not to mention proably still cost quite a bit. i may not do it after all, that gives me something to think about.. i KNOW i will love it if i do it, but just don't know.. i will probably still buy the donor truck regardless. at $2500 with 140k miles and cold a/c, it's almost a no brainer.
