I'm back with my dual 3.5" speaker brackets
      #6456117 - Fri Feb 04 2011 01:04 AM

Many of you already know about the aluminum dual-speaker brackets I offer which allow you to swap out your old single-cone dash speaker with a pair of new 3.5" two-way speakers. I am currently negotiating with a shop that can water jet a run of brackets for me, but I need to get an idea of the number of each type. If you are interested in buying one for your A-body, or just need more information, please send me a PM or email moparmad57@gmail.com . The attached photos are examples of a typical installation.

I slipped away for a short while to start a new job, but I'm back now with some great news. The water-jetting was a big success for me and I now have a stockpile of the dual speaker brackets for all A, B, and E-body models and years. In the following photo the style on the left fits early A-bodies ('64-'66), the middle one fits later A-bodies ('67-'76) and early B-bodies ('64-'70), and the one on the right fits later B-bodies and E-bodies ('71-'74).

Some of you guys who are using my brackets need to tell us which brand and model speakers you are installing. I've been getting a little feedback from a few buyers, and I'm putting together a list of options, but I'm sure there are many more to consider. Maybe some of you could start a separate thread to help others who are undecided on which speakers to buy. I only have experience with the Volfenhag 3-1/2" that my son put in his Dart.

Yep, same ones... Here are the specs from another vendor's description:

BRAND NEW Volfenhag ZX832R 3.5" 300 Watts Max 2-Way Car Speakers (Pair)
1/2" Neodymium Dome Tweeter
Red P.P. Coating Paper Cone
Butyl Rubber Surround
300W Peak Power
Frequency Response: 100Hz-20KHz
Sensitivity: 87dB @ 1W/1M
4 Ohm Impedance

We installed one set in a '74 Dart Sport and another in a '74 Duster with no problems with the tweeters. I always suggest to folks who don't quite have enough clearance off the dash grill that they can cut short segments of rubber fuel line to use as spacers either between the speaker and bracket, or the bracket and dash. The rubber also serves as a good vibration dampenener.

There's always more than one way to skin a cat,
Jerry

The tweaters protrude A LOT with those Ebay speakers, I'd look somewhere else frankly.

I'll post a picture later, you would have to space them out a good half inch or more to keep from hitting the dash.

Which car model are you considering these speakers for? The two A-bodies I installed those in gave me no trouble at all. I'll try to get a good photo or two this weekend of my son's Dart Sport so you can see how they look installed.

Got the brackets today. I'll have to do a test fit on my '69 Coronet to see if there is room above the top of the bracket, to decide if I should enlarge the speaker holes in the bracket to allow the speaker to poke through and mount the speaker tabs directly to the bracket, or if no room above the bracket, then I will need to make a spacer to go between the bracket and the speaker tabs? The speakers are Infinity Kappa 32.9cf.

I also ordered some Infinity Kappa 63.9 3-way 6-1/2"x6-3/4' speakers for the rear.

I'd like to get an amplified sub, but I'll wait to see how these speakers sound.

If they are 3.5" or 4", you should be able to mount your speakers underneath the bracket (that's what it is designed to do.) All you have to do is drill a few small pilot holes for the screws provided with your speakers. The tabs usually have a little flexibility and can be drawn down tightly against the bracket. Mounting underneath gives a little more clearance for the center tweeter cone. All the speakers I have seen have a rigid ring around the cone surround that does not compress, which protects the flexible surround. Mock it up for a test fit before cutting the holes larger, like the attached pic with a 4" Volfenhag two-way speaker on my bracket that has 3" holes.

I'll have to take some pictures tomorrow.
I measured 3/8" from the bottom of the bracket to the bottom of the dash, so I am going to mount the speaker under the bracket like you mentioned.
The mounting tabs on my speakers are 1/2" from the top of the speaker ring. I have some 1/2" Lexan that I made spacers with. Used a 1" hole saw to make the spacers. Also, the new speakers are not as deep below the mounting bracket as the stock speaker, so there should be no problem with clearance for the radio
So far it's looking good. Need to pickup some flat black paint and hardware to mount the speakers.

Bad news, good news.
The Bad: The speakers would not fit as previously shown. The cable (and bracket) for the heater control was hitting the drivers side speaker.
The car is a non-A/C car if it makes a difference.

The Good: I opened up the speaker holes so the speakers go through the bracket. This moved the larger outer diameter of the speaker up, and the heater cable/bracket jut cleared the smaller diameter of the lower part of the speaker
No issue with the portion sticking through the bracket (may even be better this way?)

On the '68-70 B-Body brackets you may want to move the drivers side speaker hole about 1/4" Left/Forward for better clearance around the heater controls? I will get a under dash photo tomorrow. I just had my cell phone tonight and took photos of bracket with speakers mounted through it:

The speakers sound good. Better than what I was using. I think I'm still going to need a sub.
The 6-1/2" speakers may just fit the lower rear side panels below the power window switch?
I need to pull a panel and see how much room is behind it?
