Well I just found out that the FOURTH NV4500 5-speed I have put in my 99 Cummins dually crapped out AGAIN! It was put in last August and came from a rebuilder in Memphis, TN. Of course it had a 90 day warranty and I have NOT been towing heavy since then, so I am done with those POS transmissions. Anyone here have any experience with changing over to an NV5600 6-speed in this era truck? It always seemed that the truck needed another gear, I had to shift down to third several times going up mountain grades and when shifting to fourth it would drop down way too far making me shift into third again sooner than I wanted too. Should I waste my time rebuilding this 4500 or try the 5600? I know the bellhousings are different, but what about the clutches?

Jim, Is your truck a two wheel drive?
Have all your rebuilds been stock?
Have you checked into an alison transmission?
How about the Ford Transmission? I bought a 12V cummins out of a 98 Ford F700 and I still have the bellhousing.

It's been a long time since I researched all this-I thought about changing Dad's '98 3500 over from the 4500-so there could be a point or two missing, or incorrect....I'll have to sort through my bookmarks again to make sure....
The original 5600s ('99-00) used the same 1-1/4" input shaft as a 4500. Apparently they proved to be too light in actual use, so the HO trucks ('01+) went to a 1-3/8" input shaft. When the change was made, syncros etc. inside the tranny were changed as well. IIRC you can get a clutch disc to fit the large input spline to the earlier flywheel/pressure plate? The HO trucks use a different flywheel, pressure plate and disc (bigger diameter). The '98+ trucks have the same crossmember for 4500 or 5600s. Driveshafts need to be changed or retubed as the 5600 is longer than the 4500-front (if 4x4) needs to stretch, rear needs to shrink. Clutch hydraulics can stay the same. Bellhousing is integral to the tranny on a 5600.
I can find you some more links with a lot more detail if you want.

Yes the truck is stock and I recently had the driveshaft rebuilt unfortuneatly. Thanks for the info, if I keep the truck I might go ahead and do it though. It sounds like if I am going through that expense then it would make sense to use the 01-up set-up. I have priced everything out on eBay already.
