Cheers Don.

Thanks, yes, they are steel, got them from S&W RaceCars had to cut them down quite a bit, they were too tall and too wide, but that's what they make cut off wheels for

Wish you had some pictures of the process where you cut and where you over lapped things. Is there a bit of a lip left where the frame would be? Tubs are over the frame a bit?

You did such a nice clean job I woul like to do this with my ram charger.

Yeah, sadly, I meant to take pics before I welded the tubs in but it required two people to hold the tubs in place while I tacked them in, my son was helping me and he had to go...so...I got in a hurry to utilize my help before it was gone...lol. Basically, all I did was cut the factory wheel tubs out with an additional 4.5 inches toward the frame, then I fitted the tubs to sit on the lip of the bed and butt welded the curved portion of the tub to the bed wall, added seam sealer and there you have it. S&W offers 40" steel tubs, if I had it to do over agin I would have used them, after I cut some of the height off of these 38"ers I ended up with a amall gap on the fore and aft ends.

Thanks, have an A body rear bought, soon as it gets back from the paint shop I'll start with the installation of that and the lowering process...cleaning the shop now gettting ready for the engine build, it will either be a 360 or 408 depending on the condition of the cylinder bores, if new pistons are required it will become a 408 .

the 12" with 4.5 BS-29x15x15 M/Ts with the A-body 8 3/4 is a sweet combo,I have done 3 now.

Very cool..... Drooling.......

We just dropped an a body rear under my boys ride. The perches were off a hair but no big deal.

I have been wondering if we plan on keeping the leafs moving inside of the frame to make use of the extra tire space how would we go at it? The fuel tank would have to go and a cross member in the back would have to be moved too. Then new spring perches would be welded on.

How far are you going in the rear of this truck?

Cheers Don.

Actually, props to you, I've paid attention to your write-ups and plan to put the axle on top of the springs and run the exact wheels you describe...just need to find some wheels like I have in those widths and back spacing and some street legal tires in that width.

member kenworthgoose did it that way by removeing the spring hangers to the inside frame rails.

I dont remember if he used a front hanger on the back to flip the shackle. he just welded in some plate stock to box the frame, mount the hangers/leafs,moved the perches on the axle.

he also narrowed the 8 1/4 and IIRC is narrower than the A-body 8 3/4.

I would do a search for his build and read up on what he did.

it sure looks fat from the back

myself,I will add ladder bars in line under the frame rail(I dont like them inside the frame rail on the street.) weld it all in while its sitting on the leaf springs then remove them from the outside of the frame. this will keep you ride height and pinion angle settings going from leafs to coil over/ladder bars.

then tuck 14" rims with a 18.50-21.50 tire in there.

dont forget the lipstick on the 8 3/4 punkin

yes,springs in stock location.

yes,tubbed flush with the frame.

yes,rim/tire combo is 12" rim with a 4.5 backset-29x15x15 M/T sportsman SR radial.

this is with an A-body 8 3/4 with the large brakes and 5 on 4.5 wbp,which makes the A-body 8 3/4 a 1/2" wider = 1/4" each side.

if you are going with the a-body 1 3/4" brakes,IIRC the backset will be 4.25

the shackle flip gives a drag truck stance with out slamming it down on the ground lowrider style.

here is the front rear spring hanger on the rear to flip the shackle so the axle goes on top of the leafs.

you use the car u-bolts and shock plates,IIRC 69 dodge wagon rear shocks.

I used a full set of stock tubbes to ad to the 1/2 tubb in the bed after the cut.

I cut the bed floor right over to the bed frame support,I left it to support the bed floor.

you can see the support in this pic of the tubb I did.

How close are these to the leafs? Did you roll the well lip? What about off set hangers?

I measured twice and get 15.25" s from our leafs to the box well lip. Kinda tight for my liking.

has perfect clearance at the leaf and tire bulge, has perfect clearance at the fender lip,did not roll the lip.used stock truck rear shackle.

now I will say if the axle on top of the spring did not stop when hitting the frame,it might have a slim chance of touching the tire bulge. if the frame was C-notched and the tire went all the way up and touched the top of the tub then it might have clearance problems at the fender lip... thats eyeballing both my stepside and wide box.

I was about chopping my stepside up as my first one after learning this combo from member Flight727.

you can trust in it fitting like a glove with the flip flop with this tire/wheel combo.

I am running mono leafs and lift bars on my 440 truck with this exact flip flop combo. I have about 2" clearance on the frame and axle tube at static ride hieght,it lifts the rear of the truck 3-5 inches on the launch

I have pics of the stepside and the wide box if you want a better looky see at mine.

Rickster did his with the stock truck 8 1/4 rear axle by using a 10" rim with 7" backset and the same 29x15x15 M/T SR radial. just tubb it flush with the frame.

had the same clearance at the fender lip and tire bulge.IIRC

Interesting because I measured twice and get 15.5"s on both sides from the spring to the well lip. Tubing to the frame gives 3"s to the leafs we have 12.5"s in the stock wells.

To me perfect fit is 1.5"s around the wheel everywhere.

Am I measuring right or is the section width of the 29x15 on a 12" rim narrower? Or good and stiff.

Cheers Don.
