Any downsides to running Napier 2nd rings?
      #7095963 - Wed Feb 29 2012 09:17 AM

I've already got a set of rings for the 452 rebuild in progress, but I'm considering picking up another set that uses Napier 2nds, rather than a standard style. This is a fresh re-hone for a street/strip piece and my intent is to still run standard-tension oil rings, although the ring set I see that includes Napier 2nds is listed as a low tension. Any downsides (besides having to buy another set of rings) to making this switch? Thanks.

I run and have ran Napier 2nd rings. We use them to help scrape the walls down on alcohol motors. Have not seen them run on a gas motor but would think they would work fine.

No negative. The special "hooked groove" acts like a one way valve allowing good ring action while relieving any excess pressure between ring 1 and 2. Most of the pro racers use them. They work fine with any oil ring style and any fuel.

On my alcohol motor the oil looks like new when drained. With normal rings I used to get a slight amount of oil dilution.

I've ran them for 4 or 5 years now, on gas I like them.

Have you tryed just buyng the second ring and not a full set?

Not cost effective, from what I see for the price of just the 2nd rings...

They work great in my local 93 pump gas engine... One thing I had noticed over my last setup was (I run evac system)is that my dipstic tube doesn't pop out at all like it did some before on the big end
