New Windage Tray w/ Molded Gasket for Big Block Engines
      #6791432 - Tue Aug 23 2011 01:23 PM Attachment (488 downloads)

This New Big Block Mopar & Hemi windage tray is made from glass filled nylon and features torque limit rings and re-usable silicone gaskets molded on the top & bottom of the tray. This tray is made using the same materials as many modern OEM engines. This combination windage tray & gasket increases HP, and is re-usable (hand wash with soap & water). Future engine service is simpler since you won't have to scrape off the old gaskets and replace them each time the oil pan is removed. Available in two sizes - up to 3.75" stroke or up to 4.15" stroke. Fits all Big Block Mopar B/RB/Hemi engines (383/400/413/426W/426 Hemi/440). Made in USA.

Part # Description
555-502000 Windage Tray w/ Gasket – B/RB/Hemi – up to 3.75” Stroke

555-502001 Windage Tray w/ Gasket – B/RB/Hemi – up to 4.15” Stroke

Kind of pricey (compared to gaskets), but cool.

I remember seeing the steel core gaskets a couple years ago and seeing them priced at 20 bucks or so. Then thinking that I needed two with a windage tray. $$$ added up quick.

This definitely looks like like a more elegant solution, especially if you're in the market for a windage tray too.

Too bad the tray that was copied to make this was one that had the added louvers for the oil to get back to the sump faster like a milodon unit instead of the MP unit which is a just flat tray.

I checked into this situation and was told that Chrysler tested this style windage tray back in the day, by adding additional louver vents. The additional louver vents didn’t improve the engine performance in any way.

I'm not looking for improved engine performance , I'm interested in the oil getting back to the sump FASTER ...

I have an old Direct Connection windage tray #3751236 and it has the louvers just like the current Mopar Performance windage tray P4120998 - link

Must have been production engines that had the flat tray?

The MP unit I bought a few years is the flat tray, same as in my hemi crate motor and same I've pulled from 69 vintage engines.

Interesting, can you dig up the part number of the MP tray you bought a few years ago? The Direct Connection tray I have has the part number stamped on the bottom of it - 3751236

I also have a 2000 Mopar Performance catalog and the only big block windage tray they list is this louvered part P4120998 - link

The factory original windage tray was P/N #2863983

Okay, I asked ZIPPY about the MP windage tray and this is what he said:

Quote:

What you're seeing/hearing about there is actually a mistake.....kind of an accidental variant.

The trays are all supposed to have louvers, but because of the large quantities produced, the tooling gets worn out. The slots in the tray get smaller and smaller over time, and eventually they close up completely.

After a time, the tooling gets repaired (lots of welding and grinding, very expensive) so the louvers are more pronounced and more open again. Then the process repeats itself....

It's happened many times, over alot of years....That's why Chuck Senatore's book recommends to always check that area, and open up the louvers if they aren't stamped very large.

I have a hunch MP's stamper is using the OEM tool from the
'60s-'70s, and the tool keeps getting repaired and re-used, but would need to ask around to see if it is really true. I say that because of comparing old OEM '60s trays to newer ones I've done in the past....they look about the same, except for the louver areas.

I can't see the summit link here at work , and The new tray I have is at a hot rod shop getting louvered along with a few others. I can't remember ever seeing louvers on the wide flat at the bottom and never even thought about it till I bought a milodon stroker tray .

Okay, I see what you're saying now. Yes, never seen a MP try with louvers on the bottom flat like the Milodon unit.

I'll get some pictures after dinner.
First impressions, this is a nice part, and I like the built in seal gaskets, and steel spacers so you can't over tighten it.
I put it on the 505 engine with the 440 source 4.25" stroker kit, and the drivers side of the tray just touched the rod bolts very slightly. I considered several options, but what I ended up doing is taking a heat gun, and a hammer (just to press on the windage tray), put the tray inside the oil pan for support and heated the drivers side where the windage tray part starts. It did not look like I did much, but now the tray clears easily. The slots in the tray are pretty narrow, so I will open them up a bit when I get my dremel back.

This looks like it will work without too much hassel. The stock steel windage tray is too shallow and hits the rods, and the 440 source stroker tray is too deep for the oil pan I have. I was about to cut and re-weld the source tray when I found this thread.

I won't have the 505" stroker together for at least a month. I still have to prep the heads (pushrod clearance, valve spring seats, gasket match.)
It looks like it will seal way better than than the steel windage tray and two gaskets?

Well I messed around with the tray today, and got it to clear a 4.25" stroke 440 with the 2.2" rods.
The tray is closest to the rod bolts on the drivers side (oil pickup tube side.) If the tray would have started turning downward a bit sooner, it would clear no problem. I clamped the drivers side gasket area between some flat stock and heated the tray while pressing the windage part down sooner. It really did not change much, but it opened up the clearance. It would be nice if they produced this pan for the 4.25" stroker. Really the tray does not to be deeper, just the downward bends need to start sooner/later making the tray area wider.
I also opened up the louvers, then bolted it on with the oil pan (no front cover) so I could see the clearance with the tray bolted down, and it looks like it will now work.

Hi,

I just finished putting one on my 400 with a factory 402 pan. The pan rail was pretty straight but with the thickness of this composite tray, I'm sure some minor dimpling would still be resolved.

I have about an hour's worth of run time with the car on jack stands and probably another hour this weekend while I finish some other work. So far, no leaks and I've checked the pan rail area pretty closely. I'm very satisfied with this, especially considering the price.

If someone wants, I can post a picture of the pan rail area to show the thickness of this part once it's installed.

Mike.
