2002 2500 Cummins 4x2 . Mostly a work truck, but tow the racecar sometimes. 85k miles. I've heard of a valve body upgrade while upgrading the converter is a must. Don't have a ton of $ to do un-needed upgrades. I would love to hear any thoughts on "smart" upgrades. Thanks Moparts

A good deep pan (more capacity = cooler fluid) and a premium tranny fluid such as Amsoil. You may want to think about a cooler thermostat for the Cummins also. I can get you the part number if your interested. This will lower your tranny temperature by 20 degrees. Maybe do a band adjustment while you have the pan off.

These guys are the tranny experts. http://www.goerend.com/ Their name comes up in every discussion about tranny's on every diesel forum. They will advise you, sell you the parts, and tell you how to install them. You won't believe the difference a single disc converter makes.

Only if you can get those clowns to answer the phone. I was in the market for one this summer and after 20 or so calls to them at various times of the day Mon.-Fri. they never answered. They did return my call since I finally left a message. By then I said screw it when they wanted $750 for a converter.
There is a tranny shop in Omaha,NE that HP383 found for me that has them in stock for $300-$400 depending on what you want. Goerends are billet and tough I'm sure but unless it's only towing max capacity do you really need a $750 converter? Not me.

Well, about the 750 converter. I want "One Million Miles" on this pig, and rumors have it that I need a quality converter, valve body and cooling package on it to do it. What about an ATI with all of the Sonix mods to the pressure reg valve. Full time lube so the converter stays charged? Thanks guys, more input, please..

Rick, our tech only installs ATI's. Not sure about any other details. I can check tomorrow.

I built my trans using Dave G's 3disc converter and valve body kit and a few helpful building tips he has provided. In my book there is no one else to deal with. The trans now compliments my engine mods nicely. I have also sold four of his "box" transmissions to good customers that were in need of a good trans and all of them are still very satisfied with the product. FWIW Dave has always called me back within a day or two of me leaving a message. Busy guy, small shop, I've never expected a call within the hour.

I have heard different stories of multiple-disc converters versus single. it's just a work truck, that pulls my open trailer and GTX several times a year.

I'm betting a single disc would do you fine.... Actually that's what Dave Goerend suggested for my usage as I only have "light" mods and use the truck as a tool to tow my toys. On the other hand I have spent enough money twice over the years on the racecar that I just went ahead and got the triple disc. If I want to throw more mods at the truck (highly unlikely) the trans will handle it.

Don't these already have a really deep pan? I'm using a pan for a Cummins auto on my 727 and the nice solid spacer that goes with it.
